To coincide with the Tall Ships visiting Campbeltown in July, an exhibition of 12 fishing boats made in the Shipyard between 1968 and 1998 will be held in the Library. Called Made in Campbeltown, the display will include crafts especially made for the month long show which include fisherman’s jerseys, gold and glass beaded jewellery, wood carvings and other items which will be displayed by Alba Heritage Trust, a Charity and Social Enterprise and Argyll and Bute Council
The exhibition opens to the public on 9th July to celebrate quality items which have all been Made in Campbeltown and the people who made them. It must be seen by all visitors and locals who are proud of the town and all it produces which includes the very best of food and drink in the world.
The opening event and exhibition preview will be 8th July 2011 at 7.30pm in the Campbeltown Aqualibrium, when bagpipes will pipe in the best of food and drink the area has to offer to launch the exhibition in style. This month long event coincides with the Tall Ship Race 2011 which will pass Campbeltown on the way to Lerwick and it is hoped that it will attract crews to the area to see the display and encourage them to buy from the local businesses.
Ex Shipyard staff, local fishermen (past and present), the artisans and their family and friends have been invited to the launch event.
Spokesperson for the Third Sector and Communities Councillor Rory Colville, said: “This event is an excellent way of showcasing the quality items which are produced here. Campbeltown is rich with talent and the food and drink we produce is some of the finest in the world. The exhibition lets us celebrate the skills and talent of the local people and the legacy they leave behind.
“Campbeltown Shipyard Apprenticeship Schemes have given those who participated in them lifelong skills which have served the participants well in setting up their own companies and getting work since the shipyard closes.”
Due to constraints of numbers in the Library, the opening event is by invitation only.
Photos of the fishing boats by Sam Henderson (author of Fishing Boats of Campbeltown Shipyard) will be displayed along with artefacts in the exhibition which has been designed by local Arts graduates Dawnne McGeachy and Rossi Oman who both have a passion for their hometown of Campbeltown and will be using their skills to enhance the work of their fellow artists and crafters:

• Jacqui MacKenzie and Glen Millar who have both returned to their native homeland to start their business partnership of creating glass beaded jewellery from scratch.
• Sheena MacAlister whose cushions depicting seaweed and shells from the coast off Campbeltown are very popular with tourists.

All the above are fine quality items Made in Campbeltown and have a link with the sea which surrounds the town. Also, the main food producers in the area will provide cheese, smoked fish, whisky and oatcakes for the opening event on 8th July.
The exhibition will be on show during normal opening hours of the library from 9th – 30th July and it will be possible to order items during this month.
