School Competition to name new road

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Tue Nov 01, 2011 7:03 pm

A competition is about to get underway with Castlehill and Dalintober Primary Schools to suggest a name for the new road through Park Square. Dalintober will also be taking part in an art competition showing what the renewable industry means for Campbeltown. Entries for the art competition will be on display before the end of the year.

If you'll just excuse me for this, I couldn't resist it.

Pictures the scene....

Here are some of the entries....
Sheep Dip Avenue
Seaweed Street
DSS Road
Louis Walsh Way
Simon Cowel Cutting

But in third place we have - X-Factor Boulevard
In second place - Lady Ga Ga Lane

And now, in first place, and one I'm sure you'll give a loud cheer for.... Tesco Parkway.
Ouch !

I thought there had already been a competition for this. I remember passing on some entries from the Grammar School, though not very many if the truth be told. Martin's tongue-in-cheek suggestions aside - at least I hope they were - I would hope that some connection with the name of the street that's being obliterated will remain. McCallum is a long-established Campbeltown name. Presumably McCallum Street was named after someone of note in the town's history. And if nothing else, the late and fondly-remembered Baldie McCallum could be commemorated in this way for all he did for the town.

All that having been said, why is it necessary to give the new road a name at all? Is it not simply a re-alignment of Kinloch Road and therefore can be said to have a name already?

Yes, Witchnettle, I think that may indeed have been the case. However, I was picking up on the title of the thread, which implies otherwise. Best regards.

One can only assume this is to name the new road. From the Council website

New Road Naming

Hope not. Why can't it be left at McCallum Street?

Not heard or read anything officially yet but I too like the idea of retaining McCallum Street. Especially after Bill.

They probably will have to retain some entrance to the back of the new houses and the side of the Kilbrannan so perhaps McCallum street will remain. On searching I would imagine it has to

That is a ridiculous name for the road and calling the pool that was bad enough.

I would have thought MacKinnon Street would be a good name as it also leads to the statue of William MacKinnon beside the Aqualibrium.

As the appearance of the town changes, with new builds and road layouts, my main concern is that the old street names will vanish forever! It would be very very sad indeed if that should happen!

Aquilibrium Avenue is the new name. Ridiculous!
I was always led to believe that an avenue had trees on either side!
I like Kevin's idea of Mc Kinnon Road. Infinitely better than Aquilibrium Avenue.
I don't post very often but I'm disgusted at this choice of street name.
Is it possible to have it changed? Perhaps we should start a petition!

If they have to change it at all, McKinnon Road/Street would be a good alternative.

Maybe a petition aginst Aqualibrium Road would be a good idea. (If it's true that that name is to be considered)

I just cant believe that the new street will be called Aqualibrium Avenue. It is not just not possible that the powers that be would pick that name.
