Like many have said before - speechless - can't believe anyone would do something like this.

Certainly not a rumour and certainly not the work of kids.

It's a real shame that people have that sort of thing in their mind before they even start to walk over! As was previously said I don't think it was kids.

Hopefully they will be caught, and convicted, but that will probably be a hard job. Unless maybe the good old "wee toon" grape vine will work and inform them.

This work of art is as significant to the town and Kintyre as Dali's Christ of St John of the Cross in the Kelvingrove art gallery. Can you imagine the hue and cry if a similar act of desecration had been done to it? At least Scottish if not international news. Does anyone have any contacts at either BBC Scotland or ITV so that this can be publicised and a restoration appeal put into force, if necessary?

He's worth a try... and an appeal to anyone that lives or visited Campbeltown in the last week would be worth a try as well. The person that did this IS known to someone!

This is terrible.
Might be too obvious, but is worth asking around the local paint shops, to find out anybody that's bought spray paint in the past week? - also maybe the type of person who did this might be the sort to dump the spray cans somewhere on the walk back round from the cave. Might be worth a look amongst the rocks, if anyones over..could get some fingerprints....!?

Painting

Postby Sweltered » Sat Jul 29, 2006 12:35 am

Words fail me. I don't know if anyone has posted this thought or not. But surely this was premeditated. Why else would they take spray paint with them. We did our fair share of stupid things as kids/teenagers, but I don't remember anything as bad as this.
OOH did they knock down McCaigs folly.....

I was making a generalisation about young people, without sounding too much like a fogey. How can you be sure this isn't kids, bearing in mind anyone under 16 is a kid in most eyes.

Edit - sorry, late last night - not in the actual know - just reading previous posts which make me believe it is not kids...

If somebody's starting a reward kitty, you can put me down for a tenner.

The fact that it's not fenced off; the fact that there's no perspex; the fact that it's not locked up; the fact that there's no security guard..................................

These are the reasons that I visit Kintyre
