Park Terrace, Aqualibrium Avenue, Campbeltown

Argyll and Bute Council has agreed to an ambitious and forward-looking programme to assist regeneration and economic development in five of it’s waterfront towns - Campbeltown, Helensburgh, Oban, Rothesay and Dunoon. In November 2008, the Council unanimously agreed to allocate more than £30 million to the programme, since named ‘CHORD’

The multi-million pound initiative will see major improvements to the town centres and waterfronts of all five towns.

* Campbeltown – improvements to the town’s heritage and conservation sites through the Campbeltown Town Centre Regeneration Project, the re-development of the existing marina and the regeneration of the Kinloch Road area (£6.5million).

To find out more (or indeed less!) about the Campbeltown CHORD project in Campbeltown see.

Councillor Rory Colville is the CHAIR of the Campbeltown Project Board which both Cllrs Donald Kelly and John Semple sit on along with Council Officers.

No idea why they think the name Aqualibrium fits in historically with the towns heritage but I suppose it is in keeping with the track record of the elected members who are supposed to speak for us it's no surprise that they have completely ignored the feelings of the people who elect them.

Their attempts at offloading one of the most historical town halls in Argyll, talk of selling off the provests chain, failing to speak about the Picture House becoming nothing more that a monument to the committee who are so far up where the sun don't shine they have lost the signal of what the community want and then have the cheek to ask the locals to fund it but then don't allow it for community events.

I have always wondered where are all the paintings that were removed from the Burnett Buliding especially MacTaggart's have been stored. Could one of the Councillors tell us on here ?

I suppose we'll be seeing Rory in the Courier (I'm sure he will be re-elected) awarding a child from the local nursery a prize for naming the new Grammar School Aqualibrium Acadamy if it goes ahead on Kinloch green. Oops is it still called Kinloch green or have they changed it yet ?

Councillor Coliville has been in contact to say the houses will be known as Park Terrace, Campbeltown and to all intent purposes Aqualibrium Avenue will be no more than a name on a street sign.

Rory also confirmed the name was chosen by Campbeltown Chord members which includes all three local councillors and said "
Aqualibrium was the beginning of the Campbeltown regeneration programme which grew to include the demolition and rebuild of Park square etc , and subsequently the CHORD project"

Why not call it "Wind Tower Way" then!!! as to all intent purposes that is why the road was built.

This is incredibly stupid.

Firstly Aqualibrium Avenue is a joke of a name and secondly why bother naming it that if it won't be used anyway?

Of course it is but it's not their money so what the heck boys. If this makes sense to Donald, John and Rory then maybe other decisions made by Chord need to be looked at. They are after all supposed to be there for our benefit but do not appear to be listening to public opinion.

Last chance to try and avoid being stuck with this totally banal and embarrassing name. There is no need to give this road a new name anyway: it is simply a re-alignment of Kinloch Road so should simply be called Kinloch Road. The young lad who was told he had won the competition could simply be told that on fuller consideration it was decided not to rename the road after all. There is still time to achieve this outcome, and if everyone who feels strongly about this emails Donald Kelly (he's the roads supremo now) asking (demanding?) that the name 'Aqualibrium Avenue' be kicked into touch, perhaps he would see the strength of feeling on this in the town. Donald's email address is:-

Donald.Kelly2@argyll-bute.gov.uk

Let's go for it!

Good post WC1 and if I could go off topic for a minute why is the name Park Square not good enough for the houses that are going up? The devolopment is overlooking the park (albeit scarred with the abortion of an AWP) so why not leave the name as it was?

An update from this morning's Area Committee meeting, at which I asked councillors to drop the proposed new name. A number of other forum members also attended and spoke against the proposal. The three local councillors were adamant that they detect no groundswell of public opinion against the proposal. The chairperson of the committee, Councillor Anne Horn, then ruled that the Area Committee had no locus in the matter anyway, since the name had been decided by the CHORD project group and then accepted by the full Council. However, Councillor Semple suggested that if enough people made their feelings known in advance of the next CHORD project group meeting on 15 August the matter could still be re-considered.

So, is there a groundswell out there against this name? If you feel it should be dropped, please contact the three local councillors before 15 August. Their email addresses are:-

Donald Kelly: donald.kelly2@argyll-bute.gov.uk

Rory Colville: rory.colville@argyll-bute.gov.uk

John Semple: john.semple@argyll-bute.gov.uk

Just click on these addresses to send your email message, and say something straightforward like "I object to the name "Aqualibrium Avenue". Please do not use this name for the new section of Kinloch Road." That should pretty much cover it. Remember to do it before 15 August.
