Work starts on Campbeltown’s all weather pitch

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Mon Mar 19, 2012 10:27 pm

Below is a copy of the news release appearing on the Council's website confirming that work on the All Weather Pitch will start in the next couple of weeks and be completed for August. The campaign for the All Weather Pitch has received alot of support from the forum over the years - this original thread drew the most discussion on it at viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7590&hilit=all+weather+pitch Don't have time to produce an article on this but great news for the town!

There will be a lot of activity around the Kinloch Green area soon following Argyll and Bute Council’s announcement that work is due to start on Campbeltown’s all weather pitch at the end of March.

The project which is being funded by the council and sportscotland will see a floodlit third generation (3G) multi use synthetic turf pitch which on the Kinloch Green site.

Contractors A P Thompson Sports Engineering, who have worked on a similar projects recently in Orkney, Kinlochleven and Edinburgh, will be on site from 26 March.

The council will also remove turf from the site of the pitch which it will recycle in projects around the Kintyre area.

Head of Community and Culture Donald MacVicar said, “I am delighted that we now have a start date for this project. It is a very exciting time for Campbeltown and Kintyre with the all weather pitch offering new opportunities for sports clubs in the area. It not only means that sports fixtures can take place even in inclement weather but also that clubs can deliver coaching to improve skills development throughout the year.”

A spokesperson for South Kintyre Sports Council’s All Weather Pitch Campaign said “It’s great to hear that work on the all weather pitch will finally start. After a dignified campaign by the community over the last 10 years it’s still hard to believe it is actually happening. We have no doubt that the investment by the Council’s CHORD project and Sport Scotland will create a legacy for sport in the town and we look forward to working with the Council to maximise use for our local sports clubs and casual users”

Well done everyone involved, particularly the sports council for keeping up the pressure and the players and their families for motivating the community. Certainly is a big one ticked off my to-do list..........now for that ferry ;)

Looking at the plans and just thankful I don't live anywhere near this pitch. A good idea but definitely in the wrong place.

exactly where is the right place then ! after many years of trying to get this up and running and many many consulatations with the public about different areas for pitch this was the best place, as usual wont keep everybody happy , but hey its going on, try not to go on for one of the new flats on Kinloch road it wont suit you with the all weather pitch accross the road !!!!!

Most of these pitches are away from housing and that is for a good reason. Noise and light pollution being the main concerns. I would have thought any area on the outskirts of the town would have been more reasonable. Just my opinion and just as important as any opinion you have.

Such a defensive annoying answer to my post. It just shows how inept some members are at debate especially if there is a difference of opinion.

Isa, just to join the debate what noise pollution issues will there be in comparison to the Meadows Millennium sports field and the pitch(es) that have existed on Kinloch Green for a great number of years and involve numbers playing/enjoying sport?

It seems a sensible enough place for it, surely the light will be not much more than the streetlights, and noise not much more than the existing pitches/playground? They are not going to be open in the small hours are they! :D

Seems sensisble having it near the aquilibrium and changing rooms, there is plenty parking on the esplanade & kinloch road too.

Hope all the green doesnt become developed though.
