Commonwealth theme for Argyll and Bute Secondary Youth Games 2013

The Argyll and Bute Secondary Games on 13 June had an international flavour this year when more than 600 young people from schools around Argyll and Bute gathered to compete at Mossfield Stadium and various locations around Oban, including Atlantis Leisure, Glencruitten Golf Club, Park Primary School and Oban High School.

Welcoming the event, Argyll and Bute Council Leader Roddy McCuish said
‘It’s great to see our young people representing their schools and getting a chance to shine in their chosen sport. I know that our Active Schools, leisure services, sports development and facilities teams and school staff have been working together to ensure that every youngster achieves his or her personal best.’

For the opening ceremony parade at Oban Mossfield Stadium, each school chose a Commonwealth country to represent, made a flag to carry and wore team tee-shirts provided by sponsor Purple Rock to match the team kit or the flag colours for the chosen country.

Speaking on behalf of sportscotland, Jacqueline Lynn, Head of School and Community Sport said:

‘The Argyll and Bute Youth Games is a wonderful event which provides the opportunity for pupils to take part in an action-packed day of sport and physical activity.

‘We are committed at sportscotland to increasing the opportunities for children and young people to participate in school sport, and significant progress is being made through our Active Schools Network. The Active Schools team in Argyll and Bute does an excellent job in organising the Youth Games and we commend them for their efforts.”

The Games, which were supported by Games for Scotland funding, were opened by Will Wright, Scottish triathlon champion, and the prizes were presented by Helen Paxton from local sponsors Purple Rock and Councillor Fred Hall.

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer at EventScotland, said:

‘We were delighted to work with Argyll and Bute Council on this fantastic event. Argyll and Bute Secondary Youth Games epitomises what the Games for Scotland programme has been designed to accomplish; inspiring, motivating and engendering pride amongst the people of Scotland.
