Misleading Signage

Postby Shake Your Foundations » Thu Jul 28, 2005 4:36 pm

I noticed a peculiar thing the other day walking down the street.

At the top end of Longrow (The Park Square end) the sign says "Longrow St" yet further down near the Corner Shop it just says "Longrow".

In all my years i've never heard it referred to as Longrow Street so which one is right? :?

Hy SYF,

Local tradition demands that every street has at least two names. Some even three. For example........

Hall Street = Royal Avenue = Dual Carriageway
Mafeking Place = Reform Square
Longrow = Longrow South
Barochan Place = ?

Fastest Finger First Prize for the last one

Cheers,

Russ

Good Grief Gus that was quick. Not sure what the prize is. A coffee on me at you know where is the best I can do just now :@)

I wonder if anyone has made a list of the multiple place names for the town? I can recall the late Morris M., berating me for having the wrong house number and name on a flat in Longrow when it should have been Reform Square. He left me a bit bewildered as when I checked the deeds he was absolutely right. Quite an amazing source of information was old Morris.

best regards,

Russ

Enough's enough

Hall Street was named after James Macalister Hall of killean in 1898 after his generous offer to build the Library and in 1900 Royal Avenue Mansions a massive four storey tenement block was built in Hall Street.

The dual carriageway is the type of road that passes along Hall Street.

Mafeking Place and Reform Square are on two seperate sides of Longrow.

When the Wide close was removed the new road was called Longrow South. To avoid having to re - number the whole of Longrow

Gus

Barochan Place is the name of the tenements built in Argyll Street on the site of the old militia barracks.

Hope that clears that up. Anything else boys just ask

Forgot to ask, Can I get a coffee too ?

Here, here Bubbly.

Above are poor examples. These are merely BUILDING names on streets.

Whats the difference with Barochan Place, Argyll Street and someone who has a housename, Kilkerran Road? You see..

Thanks folks for the interesting replies but unfortunately the initial questions still remains unanswered.

As an ex resident of Longrow i've never heard it referred to at any time as Longrow Street and just wondered if this was an error in erecting the sign similar to the Alan / Allan Wells fiasco earlier this month.

P.S. Can i have a cup of tea? Not into coffee :P

The Well Close is what we now call Springbank Lane, Bubbly, the bottom of Longrow South was known as the Wide Close?
Does anyone know where Beith Street is?

Beith Street is off Castlehill and leads down to the heritage centre.

SYF if you had read bubbly's post re Longrow South you would realise that it is not Longrow South Street. The OS map shows Longrow as Longrow.

Thanks Petewick Thought you might like to read the ditty about the Wide Close

It was the sink of every vice
Hotbed of drink and breeding lice
And slovenly crones from window sills
Dumped fish and bones and other swills
As one pased through one stopped one's nose
Nor glimpsed the blue for half washed clothes
That life went on in such a place
Cast shame upon the human race

Beith Place is the shortest street in Campbeltown and as oorley says it is accessed at Castlehill.
