See photos below!!

Following on from a number of threads on the forum over the last couple of years we would like to highlight the issue we have in Campbeltown once again and ask for as much as support as possible on this issue. Your comments on this matter are most welcome and will offer support to the case.

Previous posts on this matter have been made under

The simple truth of the matter is that Campbeltown has no All Weather Facilities and the likelihood is this will not improve in the next 5-6 years as the matter has now been swept under the carpet of the School Estate.

Following the Sports Council meeting in January a meeting has been arranged to discuss this issue with our local representatives next Wednesday 11th March at 7pm in the Burnett Building, Campbeltown. Can you please offer your support and attend this meeting.

We would also support Campbeltown Pupils call for an All Weather Pitch was highlighed in last week's Campbeltown Courier - see http://www.campbeltowncourier.co.uk/new ... enock.html for more detail. The Courier will also be highlighting the issue further in the coming weeks.

In the meantime here are some facts and photos to show what we are missing in Campbeltown.

Why has Campbeltown always been at the tail end of the queue when it comes to facilities like this ?
I know my Summer'll never come
I know I'll cry until my dying day has come
Let the Winter roll along
I've got nothing left but song

When you see the list of facilities elsewhere in Argyll it is unbelievable that Campbeltown has nothing!

GIven there are a number of smaller facilities elsewhere in Argyll then Kintyre at the very least should have ones in Campbeltown and say Carradale and/or Machrihanish/Southend. The facility in Tarbert looks excellent.

Too many people in Kintyre obviously not standing up and being counted on this. Can't we for once go forward as ONE community on this?

Are there any plans for such a facility? Surely it has to be in the Council's plans?

Yes there are plans, and fairly well advanced ones, but not the capital to follow it through. An AWP is likely to be programmed into the modernisation of the school estate but that is a long way away. Campbeltown missed the boat with the AWP last time around when the school estate was under consideration and we rejected the proposals, there is unlikely to be any capital support other than within the Councils School Estate Strategy unless local people are prepared to take on the development themselves. I'm up for this, waiting on the school estate to pan out is no guarantee. These are my suggestions for raising the publicity;

A stakeholder meeting - which is in hand
a petition,
press articles,
a pressure group - Where’s oor Turf (WooT)
National coverage,
Embarrassing comparative pictures,
a campaign web site.
Attend MSP’s surgery
Visit to Holyrood to see sports minister with pics and publicity

Whilst on top of this fundraising to take on the project ourselves - we would need to raise between £1m - £1.7m. Like the Aquilibrium; a combination of political pressure, positive public action and fundraising will unblock progress. But let’s be positive - the Campbeltown cringe gets us nowhere.

Not quite true, as i remember it.
In the end the "Private public partnership" idea, after considerable time, expensive plans, lengthy consultations and high hopes from most parties, could not come up with the capitol for all the proposed new builds and only a short- list was then considered.
Campbeltown was never going to be on this short-list.

Came down the road on Friday night-pouring with rain, but did that stop the weans in Lochgilphead playing football-did it hell. What a sight it was to see ones the same age as my two boys still able to enjoy the game. If we had this kind of facility here, it would be well used without a doubt by various age groups and sports.
As far as saying that we missed out when the new school rebuild was on offer, all I seem to remember the panel talking about was the 'magnificent glass walkway' that would be daft to miss out on!!!
I definitely will be supporting this cause any way I can. Unfortunately though my numbers never can up in the lotto tonight to offer to pay for it

Good points.

I was thinking Kintyre Residents All Weather Pitch - KRAWP  Certainly has a ring to it.

Your suggestions above are exactly where we, as a community, need to take forward. While I do think it is crazy that Campbeltown has nothing I think we should use this to our advantage in terms of getting support from all the other communities in Argyll. Get feedback from them on who uses it, how much, the difference it has made etc. Also what would they have different etc

Perhaps we have to take the whole thing a stage further a look at incorporating things like a running track for example - look at the bigger picture of what the whole community needs. Make Campbeltown the bench mark for the rest of Argyll in terms of facilities. A bit like the way Inverclyde is in Renfrewshire. Even just to consider these things for the future to ensure they can happen.

It would be good to see as much support on this matter as possible. Even if it is a post to say you support it.

We are all well aware of the lack of sports facilities in the town, why don't we pull together to get something done about it?

I'd like to add The Kintyre Forum - http://www.kintyreforum.com - will support this campaign in anyway it can and would encourage all members to support this.

It was interesting to note both Campbeltown Pupils and Campbeltown Boys games were called off yet again today whilst Oban Saints note on their website says

Foster's Scottish Amateur Cup - 7th Round - Saturday 7th March
Oban Saints v Bellshill Derby - Glencruitten - Kick-off 2pm - Referee: F Dickinson
If Glencruitten is unplayable, the game will take place on the 3g community pitch at Oban High School

Not sure if the game was switched or not but the Saints went on to win 5-1 and are now in the last 8 of the Scottish Amatuer Cup. A huge well done to everyone involved at Oban Saints - a great achievment to get to the last 8!

The point, however, is there was an alernative.

I came across the following pdf on my PC which I had from previous communications with regards the All Weather Pitch. The attached document dates back to 2007 if memory serves me correct but goes to show the difference in All Weather facilities in Norway in comparison to Scotland. A really interesting read and work taking time to ponder over.

Click on the following link to read http://www.visitkintyre.info/news/local ... LITIES.PDF

It does make you think that a similar comparison has to be made with regards Kintyre and the rest of Scotland and then with Norway.

I think it quite shocking that somewhere the size of Campbeltown doesnt have access to an all weather pitch, the state that the present grounds get into due to the weather, so why is it that Campbeltown cant match or improve on the facilities available to the rest of Argyll?

It really really bugs me that there not a AWP in C/town,as i said before we must be the only town in the western hemisphere without an AWP.I will support any action by any group to take this forward,so count me in.

I took a walk round Mallaig a few weeks ago and they have an excellent two year old AWP,beside the swimming pool and fitness centre.I askedthe manager in the swimming pool if it was used much they told me that it was hardly ever used as the kids were into shinty more in Mallaig, and they were not allowed to use it for shinty training incase they damaged the surface. So theres one AWP never used.
