Why don't the keepers stand in the centre of the goal until the penalty is taken then dive? Unless it is well struck into the corner they would still have a chance to save it and both keeper's made it easy for the takers to knock it straight down the middle and score.

There was quite a few hit straight down the middle last night, Boruc could have saved most of them, what with his big wide frame and erse.

TYM is absolutely right, anyone who knew nothing about football, looking in for the first time, would ask "why do the goalkeepers dive out the way?"

SPL players dont have the skill or composure, certainly under shoot out pressure, to hit the ball into the corners.
60% of these penalties would have been easily saved if the goalie had stood still and waited....not Boruc's of course!

Actually, a savvy goalkeeper could send the taker the wrong way....feint to dive to his left but be ready to dive right or stay put.

AND, I am certain goalies make too big a thing of not being beaten at the near post....if they do they get huge criticism by every "expert" in the studio or in the papers.....so, they overcompensate and leave far too much room at the far post..so they dont look bad...."not my fault guv" .................but it is still a goal.

Agree with a lot of this. Boruc's penalty was amazing. If he can repeat this at will he is a serious contender to be the Celtic penalty taker in normal 90 minute situations. And higher up the list in a shoot-out than number 11.

Now he just needs to sharpen up his goal-keeping ...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/scotland/7857419.stm if you missed them.

I'm sure I read somewhere, in the long and distant past, that Gary Lineker always rattled them as straight and as hard as he could cos he reckoned that the keepers would always dive one way.

Keepers have to have a conviction in a penalty shoot out--whether that be to the right, to the left or stay put and let the ball hit them. Commentators have a knack of making the simplest of penalties look like a work of art, by the use of the words "cool" "crowd" "wrang end" "mud pile" "Beckham" "gazza" "greetin'" "if it wasn't for penalties, we'd be fantastic". If I was a keeper, I'd dive wan way--the right way.

An old phrase from my playing days after usually being beaten by the other team was that our goalie was that slow at diving for a shot at goal or a penalty 'he would go down in instalments.
