Finally catching up with some reading though the three books I have read recently are all quite dark:
The Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood was great. Two 11 year old girls meet for the first time on a summer day and by the end of that day are accused of murdering another child. Twenty five years later, with new identities, they meet by chance. One of them is now a journalist and is reporting on a serial killer in a seaside town where the other lives. The story jumps between present day and "that" day 25 years ago.
Into The Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes was our latest bookclub read and I must admit to rolling my eyes when I heard it was about OCD. I had to apologise and admit this is one of the best books I have read this year.
This story again jumps between years from Cathy in the present to Catherine in the past. Catherine had a very abusive relationship which left her with her condition. I don't want to give anything away about the plot but I couldn't believe I could feel such terror for a character in a fictional book.
The last one, just finished today is the darkest yet. The Panopticon by Jenni Fagan has been compared to Trainspotting. This certainly won't be everybody's cup of tea as it deals with drug abuse, prostitution, assault and the care system. There are very vivid descriptions of drug highs and self harm. The language is also very bad but fitting with the characters. The main character Anais is 15 and has been a "lifer" in the care system. I really liked her character, she is witty, loyal and intelligent and has just had a bad start in life. A really well written first novel from a Scottish author but very very dark.
Any cheery recommendations for me?
