What are you reading just now?

Have your say....

Didn't mean to log on here tonight, it's past my bedtime, but glad I did!
Go for Lee Child GG, Jack Reacher is no Tom Cruise as Numberplease said, never in a million years!! I don't think I will be able to bring myself to watch him play the character
The Killing Floor was the first book if you want to start at the beginning!
I have just finished "Breaking the silence" by Diane Chamberlaine. Definitely one for the ladies but mystery, family drama, wee bit of romance and lots of twists and turns all coming together at the end made a very good read.
I am now reading "Before I go to Sleep" by S J Watson which is featuring in both Richard and Judy and Waterstones book club at the moment. A pychological thriller about a woman whose memory is wiped every night when she falls asleep. Tess Gerritsen has described it as "quite simply the best debut I have ever read", that's good enough for me to have a go. I am about a third of the way through it and enjoying it so far.

I'm glad you did too Ags! I forgot you were a Reacher fan. Those two other books sound great too and I think I'll start tonight with Breaking the Silence (great to have a Kindle!).

I've never been a bog book fan but my brother bought our wee fella a collection of Roald Dahl books for his christmas and I'm loving reading them to him. Fantastic Fox and Witches are finished already and now on to Danny the Champion of the World. Can't wait for the next chapter tomorrow evening :-)

I must now starting reading more books. Is it an age thing ladies? :D

Just what are you inferring, agewise, SCD? Although, in my case, I may be aged, but it`s been a "thing" with me ever since childhood.
At the moment, I`m reading Shatter the Bones, by Stuart Macbride. I`ve read about 3 or 4 in this series about DS Logan McRae, and I quite like them, apart from DI Steel, nothing against gay women, but she`s a bit TOO butch for my liking!

Numberplease, I'm with you but I'll leave it up to Ags to go round the ScD household and hit a large book over his head! :<>

Seriously though, don't want to be patronising Davie but you are doing the very best for the wee man by reading to him every night. I love hearing about men reading to their children - unfortunately, it is seen as a mother's job (and sadly, too many kids don't EVER experience any parent doing it!) and children who have both reading AND talking sessions with parents have the very best start in life. Lucky wee boy! So I'll forgive your wee ageism comment!

Funny how you can go off folk  I will be sure to hit him a kick if I see him running on Saturday morning ladies!
Glad you are enjoying reading now that you have hit 40 SCD, life really does begin!
I loved reading to K when she was wee and I'm sure that's why she is such a yap and full of "useless information".
My favourite books when I was young were the "faraway tree" books by Enid Blyton where lots of different characters lived in a tree, and different lands visit the top of the tree every other day. I had a blast reading them to K and she loved them too. I definitely recommend them for you (and wee ship too :D ).

Breaking the silence was great GG, a little girl becomes mute after the suicide of her father and although the end is a wee tad predictable there are plenty twists and turns along the way.

I'm glad you are enjoying your Kindle too. I love mine though as I said in my message this morning, I was demented searching for the latest Lee Child book on the bookcase last night before remembering it was on the kindle.

Well, they wouldn't read a Reacher book BUT guess what Ags? Someone recommended Before I Go To Sleep and everyone voted for that!!!!!!!!!!! I'm well pleased because last night I read up on both books you had read and actually decided on this one! I downloaded it and read a few chapters last night in bed. So it's great we're reading that one!!!!!
I'll still read a Lee Child one though!

I am more than half way through "The Lewis Man" by Peter May. This is the follow up to "The Blackhouse". I thoroughly recommend both books, and will eagerly await the final part of the trilogy next year.

I have not read any other Peter May books yet, but will certainly take a dip into his back catalogue whn I finish this one.

Your book club don`t know what they`re missing GG, in rejecting Reacher. Before Io to Sleep is the next book in my cupboard after what I`m reading now, looking forward to it.
I also love Peter May, recently read The Blackhouse, and planning tyo get The Lewis Man very soon.

Numberplease, there are a few 'snobbish' readers in my book club and they scoffed at our suggestion of a Reacher book. It was hard enough work to get them to agree to Before I Go To Sleep! They wanted The Mystery of Edwin Drood - I love Dickens but not straight after Pride and Prejudice!!! I'll have finished this book in a few days and then I'll start the Reacher one and let you know how I got on.

I had a text from a friend last night apologising for texting so late but she had just finished a brilliant book and wanted to tell me about it. It's called "My dear I wanted to tell you" by Louisa Young and is set in WW1. It's not the kind of thing I would normally go for but this friend and I usually agree when it comes to books. I checked it out on amazon today and the reviews are extremely good. Only £4-ish on kindle too! I like to find something good which is out of my comfort zone! May try this after "Before I go to sleep". Verging on half way through it now and it's good! Just wish I could stay awake for more than a few pages a night!
Shame your bookclub won't go for a Lee Child GG, bet they would really enjoy the good bit of rough that is Jack Reacher :D
I have never read any Peter May but will keep him in mind.

Among the better books I have read lately are "The bone house" by Brian Freeman.

"Play to kill" by the mother & daughter team who go by the name of P.J.Tracy.

Also "Pretty little things" from Jillane Hoffman, which was far and away the best of them.

There was also Harlan Coben's latest Myron Bolitar novel "Live wire".

Do you ladies know there is an e-book available from Lee Child? "Second son" is a short story about an incident in Jack Reacher's teenage years....
Product Description
Ever wondered what early experiences shaped Reacher's explosive career as butt-kicker supreme, the one-man guided-missile battler for justice? In this original new short story, Lee Child looks back on an incident in his hero Jack Reacher's teenage years as the younger son of a tough career US Marine, on a faraway military base in the Pacific.
I know my Summer'll never come
I know I'll cry until my dying day has come
Let the Winter roll along
I've got nothing left but song

Ags, I`ll keep an eye out for that one, it`s not my type of book either, from the sound of it, but as they say, we shouldn`t always judge a book by it`s cover. I`m also on the lookout for the book that Call the Midwife is based on, by Jennifer Worth, does anyone know if that is also the book title?
Bill, I`ve also read, and enjoyed, The Bone House, Play to Kill, and Pretty Little Things.
I`ve just finished a shorter book by Susan Hill, The Woman in Black, a ghost story. I don`t normally go for ghost stories, but I like Susan Hill, it was okaaaay, but as for the loads of reviewers saying it was the scariest thing they`d ever read, well, all I can say is they should get out more, they must have led very sheltered lives!

Bill thanks for the reminder about "Second Son", meant to download it but didn't do it at the time then clean forgot! Will look forward to reading it.
I also loved the Jilliane Hoffman but then read a later book "plea of insanity" and didn't enjoy it nearly so much, it was a huge read if I remember. Wonder if she has any more, must check her out!
Numberplease I saw the book "Call the midwife" and it does indeed have the same name as the series but you probably know that by now.
Haven't had a lot of time in the last couple of weeks so just finished "Before I go to Sleep" by S J Watson! Wow what a debut. I loved it. I couldn't keep my eyes open last night and knew I wouldn't be able to stay awake to finish it but my heart was racing as I was going to sleep. I finished it this afternoon and thoroughly recommend it, it was a brilliant finale. I see it features on the TV Bookclub tomorrow night so will be tuning in for their first episode of a new series to see what they thought.
Now what next? :D

Hi Ags, I`ve also just finished reading Before I Go To Sleep, and really liked it, despite it not being the sort of book I normally read, what an unusual story!
I`ve also just read A Cold Season, by Alison Littlewood. It reminded me a bit of the films Village of the Damned and Children of the Damned, but I really quite enjoyed it.
And I`m definitely looking for Call the Midwife next time I`m in town.
At the moment, I`m reading Serial, by John Lutz, about serial murders where the women are gagged, sexually assaulted, then skinned alive, a little bit gruesome, but good nevertheless!
