Kathy Kirby R.I.P.

Have your say....

Kathy Kirby R.I.P.

I always thought she had such a sweet voice.

"Singer Kathy Kirby, best known for her cover version of Secret Love in 1963, has died aged 72.

She will also be remembered for representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest with I Belong, coming second to Luxembourg.

During her career, Kirby had two top 10 hits and three other singles in the top 40.

In a statement, her family said the star passed away on Thursday night after suffering from a short illness.

"She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends who have stood loyal over the years," the statement said.

Born in Essex, the star began her career working with bandleader Bert Ambrose who took her on the club circuit.

The blonde pin-up was often compared to Marilyn Monroe and, after securing her first record deal, went on to appear on several US TV programmes, such as The Ed Sullivan Show.

Kirby - whose niece Sarah is married to Sir Mark Thatcher - was one of the biggest stars of the early 1960s.

The singer, who lived in west London, made her last screen appearance in the early 80s, having largely withdrawn from the public eye."

I was never a great fan, but didn`t actually dislike her. Whenever I think of Kathy Kirby, I think, shiny lipstick, or vice versa. R.I.P

I'll probably get told I'm wrong, but I always thought of her along with Doris Day. Just listening to Kathy Kirby doing Dance On, oh wow, I do love it.
Thanks for the music gal.

No, no, no, no, I don't think I explained that very well. No, she wasn't as good as dear old Doris, but I always associated her with Doris for some reason and lumped the two of them together.
I'm still not explaining it very well and will shut up now before I bury myself even deeper !

Martin don't you think the reason you associate Kathy Kirby alongside Doris Day is that Kathy's biggest hit was a cover of Doris Day's "Secret Love" from the hit film" Calamity Jane" ?
Of course her other big hit "Dance On" was a former No.1 instrumental for The Shadows.

An original she wasn't.

You could be right about that Bill.
It was the Shadows version of Dance On that I heard first and didn't hear her version until maybe the late 1980s.
Both her and Doris were fine looking women in their younger days. Phwoar !

I remember her in a TV variety show called "The Star and Garter" along with Clinton Ford. Now, does that make me dead old or what ?
