A curious fact here is that although Kenneth McKellar's singing of this particular song has arguably come to be regarded as the definitive version, and establishes him as the Burns interpreter, it would probably not be immediately recognisable to Burns, as the tune, which is entitled "Low down in the broom" was not set to the words until 1821, when Burns had been dead for 25 years. The original tune that was used by Burns was "Major Graham of Inchbrakie", composed by the gentleman whose picture appears to the left of this message.

I know that Kenneth McKellar also made a recording of this song with the original tune, but it does not appear to be among the many McKellar recordings on Youtube. :(
