how do I check the MTU setting on the router?

In Internet Explorer, type http://192.168.0.1
This should take you to the router manager. If it doesn't, then try http://192.168.1.1 as this is the next most common network address for a router.
Login using the username, admin and password, password.
I can't remember the layout of the router manager, so just click the links down the left side of the page until you get the MTU displayed in the centre window.

HTH.

On my Draytek router you can set the MTU/MSS by connecting to it with Telnet. Don't know if this is the same on a Netgear router.

For what it's worth, mine are all set to 1500.

Cheers

Someone call the poor man and help him or I will have to do that from the states, and I won't even know what I'm talking about.
Some people die at 21 but aren't buried until they are 65.

It's the dark rum I'll be opening now  Cheers Rab 8)

For the techies out there, we should have asked Rab what ISP he used. It's AOL and it will only work properly with an MTU of 1400. Once that was set for both the router and the wireless USB adaptor it worked a treat. :D Well it did after a hard reset of the router
