Hi Malky

I have panda installed which updates every two days and I run ad-aware 6.0 twice a week. Do you think this is enough. I download patterns using adobe reader.

That sounds fine. The secret of any anti-virus software is to keep it updated regularly. The same for adaware - keep it updated too.

These are probably dumb questions, Malky:

Do you need to remove your current antivirus program before loading the new? Can you have two antivirus programs operating at the same time?

How does the NOD32 compare to Norton? I've never had a virus infiltrate using Norton, but I'm careful about what I open. Thanks

You need to completely uninstall your old anti-virus program before installing a new one.

You cannot run 2 anti-virus programs at the same time.

Norton is very hungry of system resources and practically takes over your machine It can really slow down older machines.

NOD32 is the opposite. It is also very quick at scanning your computer - up to 3 times faster than its rivals.

When you are choosing an antivirus program, are you looking mainly for the one that interferes the least with the other systems on your computer? Or are you looking for the one that gives the most thorough protection against viruses?

Probably both

IMHO NOD32 does both. Of course it doesn't include a firewall - you would need a separate product for that - Zone Alarm (which is free) or similar. If you have a broadband connection and have your computer on a lot it is vital you have a firewall.

That's where Norton or McAfee may be worth a look as they include a whole suite of programs to protect your computer from different types of attack - whether virus or other.

NOD32 is $39 from the US website and $27.30 to renew every year. The program is fit and forget - it automatically updates itself when you are online

$39.- = pounds 21.67 and $27.30 = pounds 15.17 ?

We've recently purchased a Dell Notebook that came with McAfee installed. That program grinds everything to a halt everytime it wants to update. It is akin to having a live gremlin in the machine!
I have wiped that thing out as you recommended

You can buy a 1 year, 2 year or 3 year licence for a single workstation (computer) for a home user.

1 year £23 + vat
2 year £35 + vat
3 year £46 + vat

For renewals it's £15, £25 or £37. All plus the dreaded vat.

The US website only seems to offer 1 year licences, Dorian but at least you don't have vat there.
Also, in the UK everything is more expensive. Comparing prices across the Internet and different countries reveals just how much of a rip-off living in this country is.
