Places to walk the dog in Kintyre

Postby Kevin Mc » Fri Sep 10, 2010 1:15 am

We've now got a puppy (Springer), and will be taking her up with us to Campbeltown next month during the half term.

Can anyone recommend any good walks with a dog. She'll be almost 5 months old when we come up, so she won't be able to walk up Beinn Ghuilean just yet. ;)

Is dog walking allowed on the beaches at that time of year? Obviously we will scoop any poo up :D

Also, could anyone recommend anywhere good for the puppy to stretch her legs on the journey from Glasgow?

No restrictions around this area Kevin, just keep the lead handy as there may be other dogs playing around.

No need, just tie it onto the rear bumper and 130 miles later it will be shattered you wont need to worry about walks here, it will be shattered  :? . Joking aside, there are plenty of parking places and forestry roads enroute for walkies :) .

Beach at Grogport is ace! Also lots of forest walks in the area.As the road is single track with passing places it is never really busy.Loch Lomond is a good rest stop.

Westport beach is a good place to take a dog for a walk, and for an added bonus you won't get run over by a horse

Thanks for the recommendations so far :)

Any suggestions around Campbeltown itself?

Go by the NATO jetty and walk up there.Or go over to Davaar when the tide allows.

Thats where I was going to suggest. I live beside the NATO base and have a dog. I walk her away round to the sheep flanks most days. You rarely meet anyone if you're round early in the day so, if your dogs' obedient enough, s/he won't need a lead on.

Bonnie Lass, sorry but you're talkin a load of dog's bol---ks! There is no longer any restriction on public access to anywhere in Scotland. Providing animals are under the control of their owner/s they have the same right of access.

Well its at the bottom of the tide times handed out by the Tourist Office in Campbeltown - perhaps someone should advise them. Always thought it was to do with the sheep on the island :?:

It would be a brave dog that tried to worry the feral goats on the island.

You only need to go on the causeway to Davaar at any time...there is always someone walking their dog there. I think as long as your dog is under control it's ok. My kids walk our dog over there on a daily basis. It's no problem. Anyway, it's the sheep that chase the dog! My wee dog has had sheep chase her on many occasions.

The notice on the tide times sheet is probably about health and safety. If you go on there with a dog or dogs and experience a mis-hap,they have covered themselves.

Hi Kevin

I have a Springer and walk her daily on Machrihanish Beach (her home ground) and have done since the day we got her . She loves the freedom of the beach and gets a good run in , as we all know Springers need lots of exercise. Millie is 6 now and I can never tire her out except for the days when she runs with me from Mach to Westport and back or vice versa , she sleeps like a baby . As your wee pup is only 5 months old it wont need much walking YET but just wait . Great natured dogs !! Just remember your poop bags .
