I think going out to Madrid knocked the stuffing out of him. He wanted another European cup, big time. But they could not have wished for a better man to follow him - I just hope that his remaining at United proves to be a positive influence.

History would suggest that having Mr Ferguson about the place would risk putting unbearable pressure on the new manager.Imagine that United lost a couple of games early next season,it doesn't bear thinking about.Funnily enough this is a club that has experienced the negativity that comes with keeping a previous managerial giant about the place.When Matt Busby moved up stairs, Wilf McGuiness was promoted from within to the manager's job.Such were the pressures that Wilf's hair literally turned white overnight! Similarily, when Bill Shankly resigned as manager of Liverpool Football Club he used to turn up at the training ground and the players would still refer to him as boss.His replacement Bob Paisley had to ask the board to either keep Bill away or he would have to resign! It just doesn't work.

AND tonight on the news it showed the streets of Manchester filled with people saying goodbye - it said nearly 700 thousand!!!!!!!!!!! If ever you needed an endorsement, surely that's it?

The best manager ever and in such a difficult job - and he's Scottish. Nobody can deny his success and that's a fact. I say it again - Legend!!!
