Govangirl.I can understand most of the dialect on here quite well although some of the words do tax my amoeba-like brain somewhat.Am I the only Sassenach member on here? The Carradale thread is my favourite.The wit on there is superb!

Define Sassenach, I've been told it refers to the folk who live in the lowlands of Scotland and not the English as given to understand these days.

It was originally used by The Highlanders to describe the non-gaelic speaking Lowlanders.Now used to describe the English.

Av always thought the word "Sassenach " meant an English man or wumman. Av jeest consulted theScots Dictionary and find it wis originally used tae describe a non Gaelic speaker. (that means there's a wild loat o' Sassenachs in Scotland )
Hooiver, tae ma relief,nowadays the term is used only tae describe the English.
Ah then went on tae look up the definition o' "Teuchter ", an wis more than a wee bit pit oot tae read that it's a disparagin term fur a Highlander,------an uncouth countrified person.Ma family haav been known, on the odd occasion, tae describe me as such, particularly in relation tae ma accent ! Dam cheek when Ah think o'it ! An me frae Carradil.!

Weel Sarid, ah huv always thocht oa 'teuchter' in positive terms masel but huv tae say thit it isnae a word here that the 'sassenachs' ur familiar wae.
An' as fae yersel, ye huvnae goat an uncouth bone in yer boady! Threaten that faimily o' yours wi' therr names taken' aff the will!!!!
