Come away now, its time to tidy up your boats and your gardens. What a damn boorach you're all living in. Just take a look at the postcard and realise, a tidy boat or garden is a tidy mind.

For goodness sake boy, its not even daylight yet!

Get yer elbows back onto the port covering-board before you get a fearful black moustache. You''ll not learn damn all facing the painted frames of your bunk.

They might have scraped and varnished the top-stroke on the old Jasmine, and did you see the rust running out of the bends.

Oh... I Just don't know!

Aye, you're quite right Right - an excellent post if I may say so.
See us a drink o' yer crisps!
Perhaps Gary could benefit from our new friend's wisdom?
A big sign at either end of Sally's Walk saying "Keep it Pongal".
At least the local doags will know.......

Maybe the CC could adopt this as the new village slogan?

" Welcome to Carradale - Keep it Pongal" has a certain ring to it n'est pas?

Think of a WILD, WILD SHAMBLES.......... Pongal is nothing like that.

Don't tell me this is another word peculiar to Carradale Glen, and me thinking that I was quoting from the Concise Oxford!

Gale Force 10

Postby Right Pongal » Tue Aug 23, 2005 10:04 pm

No, I'm not going to blow you away, but have you put heavy ropes on the quay, and springs fore and aft. What about the clowns to the left and jokers to the right of you?

Boy is she going to blow from the southard. Even the fermers amongst us should weigh doon their haystacks and bolt their shed doors.

Be careful your wheelie bins don't take cherge. You can tidy up the swirling leaves when your home at the weekend, instead of downing dirty pints of dirty dirty beer.

Well, well Right Pongal, aren't ye chust the right old style?
A breath o' fresh air from the days when the demon drink waas run oot o Carradale by the great and the good. They tell me that was when the wee village was at it's peak -both churches full and not a dram to be had in the place unless you kent somewan who could lea' ye in a wee message frae the toon. Ah'm no sayin' that I was in wi' aal that mind, although Terbert itsel' had a thriving Rechabite community, but Ah must say that ye could certainly see a difference in some o' them from the village in those days. Shoes shinin' and ties wi proper Presbyterian knots instead o' them dammt Windsor affairs, and hair damped doon wi' the Morgan's Pomade (and that waas jeest the weemin!). Mind you, I wunna say but the absence o' a wee drap o' the finest Brutish Spirits in the village might hae been why the Gaelic Choir was so popular. Goin' tae the Mod was rumoured tae be Crofter's Code for a wild sleever. Even the Elders knew what was goin' on and if they wurrna actually in the Bass section they wid at least turn a blind eye tae what was goin' on in foreign ports.

Of course it all changed when they got the licence for The Cruban, and for mony's an auld timer this waas when the rot started to set in. Auld Jeck's memory isna say sherp noo as it once waas but I believe that this may have been in the early 1960's but perhaps somewan better informed could confirm this?

I wudnna be surprised if that is why the Slants still like to venture en masse up to the city for the odd weekend. Hoowever, it aal changed when they started to forsake places like Golspie and Strathpeffer and settled on The Rock, the scene of many a wild scandal.

Aye, a wise man said that when considering the future we should contemplate the past. Ah neffer really understood that until noo, but now it is ass clear as day. Carradale can be great again, but only if they drive the demon drink back oot again. Keep it Pongal right enough!

Words of Wisdom

Postby Right Pongal » Tue Aug 23, 2005 11:07 pm

Well thank you Jake for your kind and worldly words. Yes this place has certainly gone to the doags in recent years.

Self control is what's required, but this new regime doesn't seem to have the bottle, just plenty of half bottles. You know, I was never against small amounts for medicinal purposes. The likes of yourself & myself, whose pivotal joints are creaking through years of hard toil and constant adjustment of our centre of gravity, deserve a little lubrication to ease the stress of necessary movement.

Well I'll bid you good night, here comes the wife with my wee hot toddy. In the morning we'll be even older, but possibly wiser!

methinks if you'd leave out the medication, your joints would be the better for not having to constantly adjust!
is that no right snoddy?
and i've heard this word toil in relation to fermin, pongal too for that matter but where o where could they be used in relation to those at the fishing?
if i'm spared

Now bubbly, I think your getting delusions of grandeur here.
It's a big assumption that my apperarances are connected to your non-appearances.

Not a bit!

It's quite simply that time of year again and I'm in training for the big event at the end of Septemeber. Gary has very kindly been sneaking me out of the cupboard in the wee church of an evening and timing my efforts before he heads off to do his duty at Sally's Walk. In fact my performance this year to date has been so crap that it probably sets him up for the task in hand.

I'll see you in the water!

An old ship-mate of mine used to say that farmers liked to use the word toil, but many were a bit shy of actually getting involved in it. As for 'pongal' being used to refer to anything agricultural, I think you have a more than 'fertile' imagination, if the byres around this village are anything to go by.

And yes, there are still men alive that took great pride in their vessels, indeed are still great varnishers to this day. You would only need to stand still for more than two minutes in their company, before they'd apply the first coat and sand you doon for the second.

Shifting the emphasis back to the land, the only 'pongal' tractors I ever witnessed, were ones still in the showroom or lying idle like museum pieces.

However, no doubt their are some fermers who like to keep their drills, furrows & round bales pongal.

A bit more civic pride is what we need!
