I am on holiday in your area from Friday 20th and I am really looking forward to everything Kintyre has to offer. I would really appreciate any advice on places to eat and where I can buy groceries etc. I would also be interested in knowing what the fuel price is in the Campbeltown area.
If anyone could recomend a special night out this would also be appreciated.

There is a Tesco and a Co-op in Campbeltown as well as some small shops. Some good pubs such as the Feathers, Burnside and the Commercial. Fuel is expensive and there is only one petrol station in Campbeltowm.

As for things to do- at night depends where you are staing in Kintyre. If in Campbeltown visit the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse. Walk across to Davaar and see the painting of Christ on the cross. Check tide times as you walk across a causeway when the tide is out.

Most of all emjoy the scenery, walks, golf (if you play) and the friendly people most of all. Oh and welcome to the Kintyre Forum.

I am obliged for the info. We are staying in the Southend area and as I say looking forward to it. Are you able to give me the fuel costs per litre?

When we were up there, and we will be again, next year, we found the Argyll, at Bellochantuy (sp?), the Ceann Loch Diner in Campbeltown, and Lite Bites in Tarbert, to be fairly good places to eat, and there`s also a very good chippy in Tarbert! On our first visit we ate at The Glen, near Carradale, and the McDonald Arms at Tayinoan, but I`ve been told that they`ve both closed down now.

Thank you for your replies I am grateful.Whilst I am interested in the price of fuel it is more about where it may be available. It has bee suggested that we fill up before leaving the Dumbarton area, as there is nothing much until Campbeltown?

McDonald Arms at Tayinloan is closed, but there is Big Jessie's by Tayinloan Ferry Terminal during the day. The Glen at Carradale is still going strong - if I'm wrong Carradale Goat will probably say so.

Perhaps you kind folk can recommend where I can buy fresh fish and local produce? I would like to find a farmers market or somewhere the local community will have a direct benefit? A farm shop selling local produce would be ideal

Believe the Farmers Market is at the Harbour Front in Tarbert on the 3rd Saturday of the month - 10am to 1pm.

You can purchase local meats etc at the Watering Can in Glenbarr any day of the week.

You are very lucky to be staying in Southend

And you have a great choice of where to eat in that village:

* Muneroy Tearoom http://www.muneroy.co.uk/
It is fantastic - especially if you like proper home baking and cooking.
The shop beside the Tearoom also sells some local produce like potatoes.
* Argyll Arms http://www.argyllarmshotel.com/
It does good value pub meals and also does takeaway pizza.

At the foot of Bellochantuy Farm road they often have a stand with their own vegetable produce for sale.
Muasdale shop, like the one in Glenbarr already mentioned, do a good range of frozen, local meat for sale.
And you can often pick up fish on the quay through the week, depending on what the boats have caught.
Another good place to eat is the Network Tearoon in Carradale, again for home baking.
Local events often have local produce for sale, so it is worth-while looking out for what is on - check posters in village shop windows.

The stand seems to be a permanent fixture now and has an honesty box.

Definitely agree about Muneroy. Lovely baking and lovely hosts.

You are sensible to do your homework and plan your journey because you never know what might happen...on a recent trip to Kintyre we discovered at Helensburgh that they were on strike at the Grangemouth depot and fuel was in short supply.
Fortunately, on that occasion, we had enough fuel to get us to Arrochar, where they had fuel and we were able to continue on our journey . But travelling from Manchester, we had no idea of the situation in Scotland.
