Fleming's Land

Postby Iain » Wed Sep 08, 2010 3:46 pm

I was about to post this in the genealogy page, but thought I'd get a better reaction with Chitchat !

My 3xG Granddad Neil McArthur (born 1796 in Tiree and lived nearly all his life in Campbeltown) is indicated as living at Flemings Land…, a listed building I believe. I get the impression that the building was either a poor-house, or at least close to one.

Then, surfing Google, I stumbled over an aerial photo of Campbeltown posted by Davie, viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2291 and "4th gen Suthen" made the remark…, "didn't realise there was as much space/greenery behind/between Main Street and Kirk St or at Fleming's land." (28th of July 2006) A reminder to us all that everything we post here is for eternity)

Anyway…, can someone tell me where it is and eventually how can I get a photo and info about it ? (it's just dawned on me that perhaps I could "Google-walk" around the town !!) :)

Thanks…, Iain.

Wow Nomad ! A hundred thanks !

Difficult to imagine the building dating from ±1810…, looks so newish !

You'll have to tell us how you adapted that photo to the Google-map. I'm showing my age there !

Thanks again…, Iain.

Alexander Fleming was born in 1824 at Ballevain, Kilkenzie. He became a partner in the Glasgow iron-masters William Baird & Co. Ltd. In 1890 he bought the Oatfield House estate on the Southend road, and Kilmaho farm estate , Kilkenzie. (Kilmaho lodge is currently up for sale with a local agent) In 1908 Fleming bank-rolled the demolition of the Wide Close which allowed Longrow to be extended (Longrow South) to make the T junction with Main St. As a thank-you they named Fleming's Land after him. He died in 1909.

Iain, this is a link to an ad. for a flat in Flemings Land. You can see the front, the garden as it is today and a view of the building from the back.

erm, what do you mean?!

in google maps you can move the picture about/ zoom etc to your hearts content. when you're happy on the top right there is a bit that says "link".

copy the address text underneath the bit that says "Paste link in email or IM"- then you can put that in an email/ on a forum and when people click they to the pic.

is that what you meant?!

Hi Glen..., and thanks for the info. Very interesting ! Unfortunately for me, I jumped to the conclusion that this was the "penicillin man" ..., but the dates of course are different ! (1881 – 1955)

Just thinking about the building on the Google pic, I think that was the old Post Office before it moved over and up the road to Castlehill (now long closed). I may be mistaken but it seems to ring a bell.

Did not want to contradict you Glenn without checking my facts first.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/2724474/Searc ... -1772-1849

The above link will take you to "Search for A Sword - The Story of Captain John Fleming R.N. (1772 - 1849) one of Scotland’s oft-forgotten heroes."Part of this enthralling story is the excerpt...

"On his return to Campbeltown, Fleming entered the Town Council in 1817 and began to buy and build properties in the Longrow, Bolgam Street, Back Street, St. John’s Street and in the town’s Main Street where his name is commemorated on the gable at The Royal Bank of Scotland where the words “Fleming’s Land” is imposed above the entry."

The Campbeltown Book by the Kintyre Civic Society, on page 376,has a photograph looking down Castlehill with the caption
"Fleming's Land is on the right, built for Captain John Fleming of Glengreggan, who was one of Nelson's officers."

I know I'll cry until my dying day has come
Let the Winter roll along
