Well Ross, as of today we now have our 100th member and she is from Australia which has good surfing from what I hear :) 8)

She lists her interests as genealogy, golf, bridge, strategy games, reading and music. Unfortunately doesn't mention surfing :( :) but I'm sure you'll find something in that list that's a mutual interest :D

100th Member

Yes - this is great 100 members in such a short time. With nearly 800 postings and the Carradale looking like odds on to be the first thread to reach 1000 views.

Our only wish is that more people would register and post and in particular females!

We also meant to say the 100th member was in fact someone else who was deleted this morning after listing their website as some dubious one.

Makes us realise that this nonsense is starting and we will need to be on the lookout!!

If anyone would like to become a Moderator then please let me know. Seriously thinking of trying to get a main sponsor for this board so we can pay moderators. What do people think about that?

Just we (I) can't be here all the time!!

That's one of the problems of using PHPBB. It's so widely used that the spammers and porn-meisters don't mind putting the work in to design a robot poster as they can re-use it any number of times.

One alternative is to set it so that all messages and users need moderator clearance before being confirmed but it's a pain in the neck for whoever has to do it and can slow down the chatter.

Cheers
Gary

Yeah, that's ok on a larger board where it's monitored by someone all the time. Best compromise here would be to vet all new members but let messages be monitored after posting.

Yes - the moderator idea is a possibility but one that should be held of on for a while.

I think we have to have some kind of vetting system in place. Not ideal and getting a bit 'cleekish' but perhaps the only way forward.. :?:

Yeah, but by vetting I meant disabling posting rights for all new members until the site administrator has checked them out. You know, make sure their email is valid - that sort of thing. Only then would the new member get the right to post messages.

The current problem you encountered was due to someone registering and immediately posting multiple dubious messages. Having a time lag between registering and posting might have helped :? :)

Malky I agree with what you say about vetting of new members - only problem is that in itself can become time consuming for admin as well as maintenance of site.

Shame it has to come to that but the more popular you get with this type of postings the more unwanted attention you attract as well.

It would be a pitty to lose board as there is a lot of good info posted so hopefully a compromise can be reached somehow

I agree - there's no way one person could manage all that. It'd take 2 or 3 to keep it all running tickety boo :)

Well we've got two admins at the moment, maybe a couple more people could volunteer and it might not be so time consuming?

Like everyone says, it would be a shame if Davie felt he had to remove the board while it's still in its infancy and yet is still going from strength to strength.
