Another bit that mum must have kept. It's dated 1978.

I'm in the process of burning memories, I want nothing left, if that bit hasn't already gone on the bonfire I'll scan it. I can see your point.

Just looking at the advert for the Plustron music centre !!! I noticed at the end is says it has a lid in "Smoked Perspex", at the end of the late 60s I was the manager of a shop that sold everything from fridges, washers, TV's, stereos etc and I can remember that a lot of the stereos had "smoked glass lids", don't think they would use that expression now do you ?.

When I bought the turntable I have now I believe the lid was described as being tinted.
The anti-smoking mafia would have 40,000 fits at the use of smoked as a description, I can just hear the advert...."Smoking can damage the health of your stereo's lid". I wonder how Kippers have managed to survive.

I believe you will find kippers survived because the herring was cured.

I didn't even know about this article in the Weekly News, but I notice that my late father Archie Duncan gets a mention for his tune "Mull of Kintyre", a pipe jig that was composed long before Paul McCartney even had any association with the area. :D

Wow Emdee ! You always come up with surprises ! You say "pipe jig," but would that have been on the fiddle or the pipes ? Probably the fiddle; as Tony's partion just goes up to "F" and McCartney's melody wanders from the 9 bagpipe notes !

Different tunes altogether.

And EMDEE's father was - like EMDEE - able to play and compose on both instruments, as far as I know :)

"Mull of Kintyre" (the jig composed by Archie Duncan) is published in the Scots Guards Collection Volume 2. Maybe you will have a copy of this from your time in the Guards and can check it out. As Mary G says they are two different tunes that happen to have the same name, although the jig is older. It has been popular over the years among pipe bands as a competition tune for medley selections. :D

Thanks Emdee ! Funnily enough, I don't have a copy..., but I do intend getting one soon.

Like me, Tony also did 10 years in the Scots Guards. He left just before I joined the band..., but we met up on many an occasion at the competitions.
