Ah, feck it, it's late and...

I can't understand anyone who votes Labour - not after TB led (sent!) our country to a war which we should have never been involved in.

(I'll do anything to get people posting! )

Ye know, if ye really want to stick it to Tony, the only way to do it in this constituency is to vote Tory, with Helensburgh and so many economic migrants from the south now in Argyll & Bute, they could take the seat. The consequences would be catastrophic for the country if they get in, but no one will take any notice of any other result from Argyll & Bute, the more Tory seats are gained the less time Tony will have. The other benefit of this tactical vote is for the SNP - as long as labour is in power north & south of the border the SNP will always be marginalised, put the Tories in at Westminster and fat Jack in Holyrood what happens - people start to take the SNP seriously again - I think this is wee Ecks plan also.

I agree about Blurr. I voted for Labour at the last General Election and certianly won't be doing so again. To be fair that was largely on the strength of the local Labour MP who was an excellent constituency MP, regardless of the colour of his rosette. I gather he's rather worried that he is going to lose his formerly-safe seat this time around.

A&B are staunchly Lib Dem at the moment, aren't they? So there's little chance of Labour getting a toe in the door here, is there?

Is there going to be a candidate standing for the Monster Raving Loony Party? They've got a great manifesto and, scarily, some of it actually makes sense! http://www.omrlp.com/

Cheers

Unfortunately not in this area, but cracking anthem nevertheless

Meanwhile on an astral plane far removed from Westminster, it looks like our esteemed MSP has had a major blow-out with the leader of Argyll and Bute Council! I don't want to give Davie legal headaches by quoting what was actually said so you can read it all for yourselves by clicking below.

Incidentally, would we be able to find out under Freedom of Information whether or not Argyll and Bute Council were seriously considering a Park and Ride Scheme for Campbeltown shoppers from Westport   :? to compenste for the proposed parking charges?

I just love the bit about making school class sizes smaller by making the kids sit closer together and giving them smaller desks. (My wife's a teacher BTW).

I meant to say I was one of the ones who said I wasn't voting.

The bit about Labour was to try and stir some interest! But it never

LibDems Under Pressure

Postby Enough » Wed May 04, 2005 8:29 pm

Just to follow up Gary's earlier post about A&B being solid LibDem.

I don't think so.

Whatever non-LibDems might have thought about the flip flop party, you had to respect the standing of Ray Michie who was, without doubt, one of the finest constituency MP's in the country. Baroness Michie commanded a 17% majority in Argyll & Bute.

This was squandered by Alan Reid who scrapped back in to replace the Baroness with a measly 5.3% majority.

If just 827 voters desert Alan this time around then Mr Reid will go from wee man to invisible man and lose his seat.

A&B is no longer rock solid, but fairly marginal. Here are the facts:-

2001 Results

Alan Reid - LibDem 9,245
Hugh Raven - Lab 7,592
David Petrie - Con 6,436
Agnes Samuel - SNP 6,433
Des Divers - SSP 1,251

1997 Results

Ray Michie - LibDem 14,351
N. MacCormack - SNP 8,278
R. Leishman - Con 6,774
A. Syed - Lab 5,596
M. Stewart - Ref'rum 713

Fair play to wee Reid. Not my cup of tea, but at least the apathy thing seems to have been put on the back burner....

Need to remember that this time the former Dunbartonshire Constituency, which are wards 28-36 (Helensburgh etc), were included in the new Argyll & Bute County Constituency so there is a higher electorate. Always thought it was stupid that people who stayed in Argyll & Bute Council area voted in the Dunbartonshire Constituency when it came to elections! :?

Ah, but Davie ma sowel, if you knew your recent history you would still be scratching your head and asking by what piece of political chicanery did Helensburgh etc. end up being in Argyll and Bute  Well you see, in the bad old days, there was a man called Michael Forsyth.......
