Rocky Burn Oyster Catcher - sad tale

Postby Ship called Dignity » Sun Jul 24, 2005 10:11 am

Don't know if many of you knew but an OysterCatcher recently built its nest on the road wall at the Rocky Burn.

Mary Turner sent me a photo of this - but I didn't want to highlight the story incase anything happened to the nest.

Image

(Sorry if the photo is big - don't have much time)

Needless to say, however, a group of youths were seen a couple of Sundays ago throwing the eggs at the dyke - the person who saw them didn't get there in time and by the time he arrived the eggs were both smashed. They had also left a pile of crisp, sweet papers etc on the road.

As Mary says herself 'What is the world coming to?'

Perhaps one you could pick up Ranald for the Courier?

That is a real shame......hope some day the youths concerned realise what they have done and are suitably ashamed..............

Many times when I am jogging round the Leerside I find piles of stuff dumped from cars...ranging from empty beer cans to a full bin bag of house party..aye and worse..........

How can people do that to the beautiful environment we live in.....

Killing lovely birds much worse of course.

Lovely picture Davie, really saddened me to learn of what happened to the nest.
I am really fond of that area of our town, and have spent a good number of years walking that stretch of road, stopping at the Rocky Burn for a drink of ice cold water.
I hope that these youngsters sooner or later regret their actions.
