Anyone know of any access points for free internet ?

I have quite a few people in the shop asking if there are any areas in town with unsecured access !

Would be handy for all to know :)

Theres a good idea.. instead of breaking into the location of the "unsecured access" and using it, just stand outside and steal it that way..

I heard "the shop" has goods that are "unsecured", so it would be good to know what shop you work in chief.

Your not from Monte Carlo or close to by any chance??

Here is the shop in question http://www.phoneking.co.uk/

You can be prosecuted for using someone's wifi, even if it is unsecured. It's not a victimless crime. Some broadband contracts have download limits and so rogue thieves can result in excess charges being levied on the unwitting user. Speeds can be affected too, if more users start accessing the service in this way. It is a crime, pure and simple. And very easy to prove.

I'd have thought the Aqualibrium, and the library in particular, should have been a prime site for a wifi hotspot. Not necssarily free, but for a small fee.

If you're with BT Openzone then, according to their website, there's a hotspot in the White Hart Hotel. Can anyone confirm this is active?

Thanks Beachcomber :)

BTW My original post was missing a few words lol.... It's for customers that are here on holiday and need to check their email's etc....

Normally I use the free access at Starbucks, McDonalds, Borders etc when i'm away from the town...

The Travel Lodge's are the worst.... Crazy hourly rate and yet the Silent Night chain supply WiFi free....

All my customers are on 8MB in the town either through BT, AOL, Madasafish, Orange etc.... Tesco & Tiscali quite good to ;)

Funny you should say about the White Heart (I'll check outside later and post back) When I was in on Wednesday night for
a couple of pints.... 2 guys through in the bar with their laptops out ! Never even thought to ask lol

Thx

i have heard that some wireless users have their access unsecured and that neighbours make use of this to, in all intents and purposes, hack in to their broadband. i don't have wireless, will do soon or i'm moving my account elsewhere, i've no intentions of paying a company i've used for 12 yrs just so that i can have wireless in my home, they should be giving it to me free like they do for new customers.

saying that, you don't have to go far to be able to hack in to my neighbours wireless, there are three within easy reach i could piggyback onto, not that i would, doesn't stop a certain other from doing it, when i get mine i'm leaving it unsecured to see if it gets his attention, then i'll be presenting him with a bill, written in felt pen on my fist.

its theft, pure and simple, if its worth having, its worth paying for, we had to during the days of 1p a minute so why should it be any different today?

Having sat there for two months working, while waiting for BT broadband to turn up at home, I can confirm that it’s active on White Hart. You can go online with BT Open zone-login, or you can buy instant surftime when opening the browser there, at www.thecloud.net

Being able to work from home is better, but I miss the kindly served pint during work these days :D

Any update since this thread was last accessed 18 months ago? Is the White Hart free WiFi or do I need to sign up for something?

I plan to be in Campbeltown for the Music Festival next month, and wondered if it was worth taking the laptop.

Does the library still have internet access available?

Thanks

Don't know about the White Hart, after the new owners. But it was a top-up hot spot.

Abot the library, I'm not sure if you need a member card.

No change in Campbeltown in the last 18 months apart from Me and Woolies selling up

or is it Woolies and I lol

The library still has internet access, but you have to use their PC's (Las I heard)

Dale at the property shop may help you out too.... (Main Street (across from the old Woolworths building))

Apart from that, it will be a Starbucks in Glasgow if you want a decent Hotspot....

To much Technology for Campbeltown to handle :<>
