The Mrs and I went for a walk up the wonderful Wee Toon Trail above the Meadows on Saturday and after marvelling at the views and the encouraging amount of activity in the harbour way below, we made our way back down skirting the reservoir. Coming up the trail was a group of 5 young men with carry outs. One of them peeled of and to our disbelief started setting fire to the undergrowth, which in the breeze was soon well ablaze and this cretin then ran up the track after his mates whooping with delight at the destruction he was wreaking. By the time I called the fire brigade they had disappeared into the trees, so no time alas to get them on camera.
We met the fire crew as they came up the track and fully reported it to them and fortunately the wind drove the fire to the water edge rather than away from it, but a good area was destroyed. More worrying was the fact that earlier we had passed six lads out on a climb and picnic and if the wind had driven the fire the other way, there may have been a different outcome.
I doubt if such lowlifes would ever use a forum like this but if you know the idiot arsonist who set that fire, it is worth remembering that many people use the trails above Campbeltown and it would only take one time for there to be a tragedy.
