Hi ionnsaigh,

Please note that I have just posted a dozen photos from the final day of trading at Paddy's Market, which closed today, Thursday 14th May 2009, for good. Visit the link below to see the photos, and if you have any thoughts or memories of the famous market, please take a moment to post a reply to the topic. It's the end of an era for market trading in Glasgow.

Guess I will have to find my cheap tobacco somewhere else - One wonders if Piccadilly Circus had comparable crime figures - would the authorities close it ?

I can still picture in my mind a few visits to Paddy's Market when I was a kid. Noisy, colourful, chaotic and hugely enjoyable.
I loved it. It was like Aladdin's cave come to life.

So why's it going? :? :(

Because of @rseholes like the one named below ,who seemed to think it was below them

Bailie Gordon Matheson, who campaigned hard for the closure of the market, and infamously described Paddy's as a "crime-ridden midden

He probably is, bluebouno1.

I was just wondering whether there was some other reasoning beyond his "crime-ridden midden" logic. A vested interest perhaps? Is there some money talking somewhere in the background, talking in a sly whisper that that he seems to hear more clearly than the general clamour of protest?
I tried a bit of googling to see if I could find out what was really going on, but there was too much sound and fury in the way of hard facts. Although I still have a strange feeling that the closing of the people's market is a bit like the clearances in miniature. :?

The next to go will be the Barra's, if he thought that the Brigate was a crime ridden midden then he has never visited the Barra's .As you say there must be some other reason for getting it closed .Maybe they will turn the arches into des res flats  .I remember when i was serving my time in Turnbull street in the late sixties,i used to go to a wee workmans restaurant under one of the arches for my lunch every day .Menu most days was a big plate of ham soup ,ribs cabbage and potatoes, stewed apples and custard, followed by a big mug of tea. Price 1/6d -.one shilling and sixpence -,7 1/2 p.

Great stuff ./

Imho, it's clear why the market has to go. Glasgow City Council bigwigs won't be able to sell the Glasgow they want if there are visible signs of street poverty that might upset visitors. Don't you people know the Commonwealth Games are going to be heralded soon? Surely you don't want tourists clapping their sensitive eyes on such eyesores? After all, the African athletes might think they've come across a third world scenario. These officials know that when H M Elizabeth visits, they hide the poverty so as not to be offended. Are people on here trying to upset these officials when they've been spinning their inspiring Glasgow campaigns for years now by claiming that behind the facade of a modern, bright, new, affluent Glasgow, poverty still exists on its streets? That some people can't afford the prices in Primark and Matalan and have to rummage around others' cast-offs just to get by? I mean, what about the nearby cafe culture that has sprung up lately - would you honestly enjoy your mocha latte if the stench of second-hand goods were wafting by? Get real folks. Support your City Councillors!

So I can count you in to help me, Blueboyno1? We can stand at the locked gates with placards demanding cocktail bars, upmarket shopping areas, Starbucks and arty farty centres. Of course, we'd need to have a collection for the councillors' expenses but a couple of hundred should do it. I'll be relying on you to keep away the riff raff.

Aye snobbery is a great blight on the city of Glasgow, is it not?

I'm getting a bit worried, Blueboy - Ionns hasn't made a peep for the last few days and I'm worried he's taken me up on my suggestion of parading outside Paddy's with placards calling for an upmarket Cafe Culture. I won't be up in Glasgow for another week and I fear I may be too late by then. Any chance of you taking him a big mug of Starbuck's skinny fat-free soya mocha chocca frappacinno? :D

I think he must be away haunting some big mansion or as you say picketing outside the brigate ,or then again he may be prowling about Kintyre incognito looking for a list of names of members who want to join the meeting.
