Mmmmmmmm, an interesting story indeed, but why is 'Big Bob' taking so 'Lang' to answer?

Aye Bitter End, it's no often yer wrong, but yer damn nearly right this time. PJ's boat was called the 'Smilin Thro', but what was the name of his wee boat in the middle? I bet you that JDCarra knows, and probably has a photo of the local shipright fitting her oot wae her gunwhales etc. No doubt Big Boab's got a right doze of photos that he's naw sharing wae us. Maybe if you speak to him nicely, he'll agree to post a few more!

A barking tank is something that was prevelant in most fishing villages years ago and was for use by folks with dogs, especially those wee yapping barstewards terriers. The idea was to throw them into the water and only pull them out when they would stop barking as and when you told them. This was a great method of training, and dogs were usually silent when they heard the word "Barkies" as opposed to the one heard most these days"Walkies" which has the opposite effect

On the other hand, it could have been the tanks that fishermen put their nets into to treat them. Barking was the term I'm sure. The boiler would have been for heating the water to allow this process to be carried out in the most efficient manner.
They maybe even used peat

Sounds right to me..It'll be interesting what the fishermen on here have say about it. I've been wondering myself what a barking tank was.

Barking was also known as cutching. Originally , the nets & twine were soaked in a solution of crushed bark and water, which had been boiled up. This process protected the nets and twine from rotting.

Cutch comes from the plant Catechu, which was imported from India in a solid block and was was then dissolved in the boiling water.

There is a story that when this form of cutch arrived in the Village, the Carradale fleet did not leave port for a week, because the packaging said "concentrate"

I made the last bit up, but go on you believed it for a minute!
OOH did they knock down McCaigs folly.....
