I wasn't even aware that that house existed. Very interesting thread.

I don't know if the house was ever operated commercially, but it would have made an excellent country house hotel.

As I remember, it was in a very concealed position, but the top of the roof and the chimneys could just be seen from the road coming north from Southend, above the trees. In its earlier years it was probably more visible.

Also, don't know where it's right or not, but I remember hearing that it was the biggest house in Kintyre. Any confirmation on that?

History

Sorry for the delay H.

Aunt worked there for only a year, 1939-1940.
Her employers were called Broom, shipbuilders I think.
My aunt was kitchen and nursery maid, she said that the work was never ending.
The Brooms also owned some surrounding cottages where other staff lived, including
Crossleggie, across the road on Killelan brae where my mother and her sister were born.

Thanks Petewick that's more than we had to start with so it all adds to the picture. Hopefully we'll get some more info in time. If your aunt was a nursery maid in 1940 the children would be in their 60s/70s now? Wonder where they moved to when they left the house?

If we all keep looking and asking something will turn up Maybe your mum remembers the house.

I'd love to hear more stories and anecdotes about my old home, Killellan House, Rosemary Broom.

Rosemary, my aunt was Amy McMillan.
She remembers Ronald Broom and a younger sister, was that you?
