MOKRUN may suddenly be swamped by up to 12,000 runners looking for an alternative event, following a story in today's Herald that the Edinburgh Marathon, also planned for May 27 2007, may be in doubt. MOKRUN organisers were disappointed when Edinburgh Marathon changed its date for the 2007 race to clash with MOKRUN's already announced date of 27 May 2007 - however decided to go ahead.

MOKRUN are very grateful to Argyll & Bute Council and the local police (and everyone else) who support our event free of charge, and sympathise with the Edinburgh Marathon organisers facing a £140,000 bill for traffic management.

See article in today's Herald -

THIS year's Edinburgh marathon will not go ahead unless the private company organising the event pays up front the staging costs due to the local council.

Donald Anderson, Edinburgh Council's sport, culture and tourism chief, has revealed that unless an undetermined sum, believed to be a few thousand pounds, is not paid a month before the event there will be no road closures granted.

His ultimatum comes as it was revealed that the staging of last year's event cost taxpayers as much as £140,000 in unpaid traffic management bills.

I know of a few runners who are entered for the Edinburgh Marathon who were disappointed that it clashed with the MOK half marathon. If the Edinburgh run is cancelled the MOKRUN may well be inundated with runners!
