I had a fantastic time in Kintyre during a recent visit, as I usually do, and I got some great shots of the area, some of which I would like to share with you.

Love the photos. You have some very interesting perspectives there! Impressive.

What is the story behind the marked rock?

Thanks all! Glad you liked 'em. All being well, I may soon be in a position to spend much more time on Kintyre and I hope to be able to take more pics like these.

The stone seems to be an imitation of a pre-historic cup and ring marked stone. These date from as early as 3000 BC and possibly even beyond. I think I can say with some confidence that it isn't an original - it isn't very worn.

The marked stone can be found just north of Torrisdale bay. To get to it, head up the shore from the old jetty, after a couple of scrambles you come upon a secluded beach. The stone is at the far side of the beach, just before the rocks. You can't miss it. Alternatively, you can follow the Kintyre trail (blue waymarkers) from the road just north of Torrisdale. This takes you right down to the beach near the stone.

Thanks jfm. I try to anticipate the weather and plan my outings accordingly, but it doesn't always prove successful!

Dependent on conditions, I normally use Cokin P series ND graduated filters and I have 2 stop and 3 stop ND filters too; I'm hoping to add to these as money allows. I also use a circular polariser. My camera is a Canon 40d and I'm currently somewhere near to the bottom of the learning curve. I'm hoping to join the Carradale CC soon - if they'll have me!
