In their first ever game in the Scottish Amateur Football League, Campbeltown Pupils "B" marked an historic day with an impressive 6 - 0 home win against Millerston Thistle.

The starting eleven comprised of 10 players under the age of 21 and six of the fourteen squad only sixteen years old and it wasn't long before the home side made their mark with young Gregor McFadyen scoring a well taken goal. A brace was to follow from Chris Thomson before John McCallum completed the scoring in the first half to make it 4-0.

Young Stuart Crossan made if 5-0 before a rather unfortunate own goal completed the rout for the Pupils. (some photos from Saturday can be seen below)

This weekend the Pupils first team kick start their league campaign away to Centre in East Kilbride with the "B" team at home again, this time to Strathaven Dynamo. Kick off is 2pm at Kintyre Park. Tarbert, meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back from their opening day defeat to new boys Haldane 5-1 with a home match again Clydebank College.

Hot off the press. Both Campbeltown Pupils first side and B teams enjoyed victories today (B team match report and photos below).

SAFL Premier Division One - Centre AFC 2 - 3 Campbeltown Pupils AFC

The first team travelled to East Kilbride to play their opening fixture of the season against Centre. In a game of two halves, played on a shocking surface, the home side raced to a 2-0 lead. However, with 5 minutes of the first half left John McCallum pulled one back for the Pupils. With the wind to their advantage the Pupils took the game by the scruff of the neck and nearly made it 2-2 when Gary Grumoli hit the bar from 25 yards. Five minutes later it was 2-2 when Gary notched his first of the season. Young Christopher Thomson secured the points when he made it 3-2.

Campbeltown Pupils - Craig Lamont, Lorne Robertson, Keith Mitchell, Sorley McKinven, Shaun Grumoli, John McCallum, Paul Grumoli, David McGeachy, Darren McGillivray, Christopher Thomson and Gary Grumoli. Subs - Craig Lang and Ewan McIlroy.

SAFL Division Three - Campbeltown Pupils "B" 3 - 0 Strathaven Dynamo

Campbeltown Pupils B made it two wins out of two in their Scottish Amateur Football League Division Three match today with an impressive 3-0 win against far travelled Strathaven Dynamo. Fielding a young side again the match was played on the Meadows after a late switch following some torrential rain in the morning.

With less than three minutes on the clock the home side raced to a 1-0 lead with impressive link up work from two of the Pupils youngest players. 16 year old Gregor McFadyen found space on the right hand side to send an inch perfect cross to the back post which found Stuart Crossan who coolly headed home.

The home side continued to hold much of the pressure in the early stages with the Lanarkshire drifting in to the match from time to time. The Pupils nearly made it 2-0 after 25 minutes with a great display of counter attacking football. Following an excellent save by Scott McBrayne his throw out reached the feet of Mark Davis. The right back drove forward to send Andrew Henderson through who unselfishly cut the ball back for Ryan Gilchrist whose shot went agonisingly wide. However, the home side were to make it 2-0 shortly after – this time Henderson was on the end of cut back and made no mistake from 5 yards hammer the ball home. With the end of the first half looming Scott McBrayne in the Pupils goal kept the score line as it was with a superb double save from the Strathaven forward.

The second half continued in much the same way as the first half with the fit, energetic young Campbeltown side dominating much of the match. To be fair to Strathaven, who travelled with only 11 players, they never game up and on occasions the Pupils can thank some stern defending from the back four of Robin Barr, Kenny Galbraith, Mark Davis and the no nonsense veteran Alan Reid. 8) Substitution Alec McPhee made it three nil with the goal of the match; from all of thirty yards the big midfielder thundered a shot that crashed off the bar and into the net off the luckless Strathaven keeper’s back. A few chances followed for the home side but credit to Strathaven who never gave up and the match ended 3-0. Another 3 points, another clean sheets and more experience for this young side. Star players of the day were Kenny Galbraith and Stuart Crossan.

Both sides retired to the Feathers Inn in the town to enjoy an impressive spread from the local public house who have confirmed they will sponsor the Pupils B team this season. A tired and weary Strathaven side set off for their long journey home but comforted in the knowledge that there’s not many sides that have travelled to Campbeltown in such luxurious transport!

Campbeltown Pupils B – Scott McBrayne, Mark Davis, Alan Reid, Kenny Galbraith, Robin Barr, Andrew Henderson, Stuart Crossan, James Armour, Ryan Gilchrist, Gregor McFadyen and Lewis McFadyen. Subs – Alexander McPhee, Martin and Fraser McFadyen.

4th September 2010 - Pupils vs Kings Park Rangers with photo

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Sun Sep 05, 2010 11:37 am

SAFL Premier Division One - Campbeltown Pupils AFC 5 v 1 King Park Rangers

After a week of excellent weather is was rather unfortunate the rain started just 10 minutes before the Pupils played their first home game of the season. However, this didn't affect a strong performance from the Pupils as they rewarded those who turned up with a comfortable 5-1 win against King's Park Rangers.

The McFadyen sponsored side took a while to get into their stride as the visitors from Glasgow enjoyed the majority of play in the first twenty minutes. But it was local side that were to strike first with the goal of game. Mark Davis drove forward and finished in spectacular style with a superb left footed strike which left the KPR keeper with no chance. This gave the locals a new found confidence after their rather nervous start.

Keith Mitchell made it 2-0 with 8 minutes of the first half left; a fine flowing move was finished off by the industrious player. King Park Rangers never gave up and at times made it uncomfortable for the Pupils but gradually everyone settled into their roles and the back four of Lorne Robertson, James Armour, Sorley McKinven and Craig Lang commanded the defence with the help of the experienced and influential Craig Colville in goal.

The men from the Wee Toon started the second half in a fashion that manager Campbell Robertson can only hope carries on to next week from the start of the gave. Every Pupils player was confident, wanted the ball and this showed as the Pupils raced to a 3-0 lead. From another attack the ball fell to Paul Grumoli and the midfielder made no mistake hammering the ball home from 12 yards. Attack after attack followed but it was the visitors who managed to pull one back against the run of play. Following some untidy defending a ball from the left was calmly slotted past the helpless Colville to make it 3-1.

However, it wasn't long before the 3 goal lead was restored. A deep free kick from Darren McGillvary was met at the back post by John McCallum whose powerful header cannoned off the cross bar to fall to Paul Grumoli who had the easiest of jobs simply heading the ball home.

Alan Reid replaced David McGeachy and Ryan Gilchrist shortly afterwards replaced Mark Davis. It was the young Pupils player who set the fifth goal up with a delightful passage of play. Left back Craig Lang, who looked comfortable and composed the whole 90 minutes, played an inch perfect ball to Gilchrist who outpaced the KPR defence and raced in on goal. Unselfishly he drew the keeper out before squaring the ball to the unmarked McCallum who had the easiest of finishes to make it 5-1 and make to two goals in consecutive games for the forward.

On the whole, despite the nervous start, the Campbeltown side can be pleased with their performance and happy with another three points.

Team - Craig Colville, Craig Lang, Sorley McKinven, James Armour, Lorne Robertson, Mark Davis, David McGeachy, Darren McGillvary, Paul Grumoli, Keith Mitchell, John McCallum Subs – Alan Reid and Ryan Gilchrist

Not so hot off the press this week - apologies but only getting this done now!

Scottish Amateur Football League Division Three

Campbeltown Pupils ‘B’ 1 v 3 West Coast Thistle

There will be many lessons for the young Pupils B side to learn in the season ahead but the future looks bright for Campbeltown if these youngsters can learn and grow with the experience they gain from each game in the Scottish Amateur Football League. Despite going down 3-1 at home to a physical, more mature and vastly experienced side from Ayrshire the huge improvement in the second half will give the youngsters confidence in their own abilities to return to winning ways and ultimately provide the natural stepping stone to the first team in future years where these experiences will serve them and the Pupils well.

West Coast Thistle had a long journey from Largs on Saturday but it was the visitors who settled first and enjoyed the majority of play in the early stages. The Pupils defence of McCallum, Lamont, Anderson and Ramsay were continually on the back foot in the opening exchanges as West Coast Thistle powered their way forward. The visitors took the lead after 17 minutes following a poor kick out by the keeper which fortunately landed at the feet of the WCT forward who kept his composure to run in and tuck the ball past Coffield to make it 1-0. The heads were down and it wasn’t long before it was 2-0 to the visitors; however, this finally appeared to be a wake up call to the home side. Armour and Crossan in the middle of the park started to get into the game more and the home side began to create a few chances for their forwards. Indeed it was Gregor McFadyen who could have won a penalty for the Pupils with the first half closing. Following a darting run from the left side McFadyen beat two to hurdle the third challenge when it would have been easier to have went down for the penalty – experience will come and honesty will go! The ball spun away from the young forward who then injured himself in the resulting tackle on the Thistle keeper forcing an early retrial being replaced by Fraser Gillespie. The striker, who scored twice in the Pupils first three games, is now out for 4 weeks. West Coast Thistle effectively killed the game off just before half time when they made it 3-0.

The second half started brightly for the Pupils as they fought for every ball and enjoyed far more possession than in the first forty-five. Gillespie and Croll tirelessly battled up front and it was the home side who were rewarded ten minutes into the second half. Ryan Gilchrist snatched on to a through ball to outpace Thistle’s central defender before showing great composure beyond his year to calmly slot the ball past the helpless away keeper. The Pupils continued to battle with keeper Coffield keeping the match alive for the home side with some heroic goalkeeping. With twenty five minutes remaining the home side were thrown another life line when West Coast Thistle were reduced to ten men following a rather rash tackle in the Pupils box by the number two to pick up his second yellow of the game. With a possible come back in site the youngsters went on the offensive but credit to the West Coast Thistle side who thwarted every effort the Pupils threw at them and indeed were unlucky on a couple of occasions not to extend their lead. Referee Peter Laing drew the match to a close and a home defeat for the Pupils B side but as said before they can take great credit from their second half performance against an impressive, experienced side from Ayrshire.

With only 8 teams in Division Three the B team have a free weekend as some of the other sides enjoy cup action.

Campbeltown Pupils ‘B’ : Robert Coffield, Martin McCallum, Craig Lamont, David Anderson, Campbell Ramsay, Lewis McFadyen, James Armour, Stuart Crossan, Ryan Gilchrist, Gregor McFadyen and Gregor Croll. Sub : Fraser Gillespie, Craig Robertson and Jamie Morris

Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division One

Busby AFC 1 v 2 Campbeltown Pupils

Campbeltown Pupils first side made it three wins out of three with an impressive win away to old rivals Busby AFC in Premier Division One. Goals from Andrew Henderson and Paul Grumoli saw the A team race to a two goal lead by half-time and enough to secure all three points for the men from the Wee Toon as the continue to regain status in the top flight.

The Pupils now sit top of the league with Postal Utd who they will welcome to Kintyre Park this Saturday. 2pm kick off.

Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Cup First Round

Campbeltown Pupils 4 v 0 Port Glasgow OBU

Campbeltown Pupils first team returned to winning ways with a comfortable 4-0 win at home in the first round of the Jimmy Marshall Cup over Port Glasgow OBU. The Pupils raced to a 1-0 lead with their fastest ever recorded goal. From kick off and with only the 4th touch of the ball the local side found the back of the net with young Christopher Thomson scoring. Credit to Port OBU who dug in and battled well and it took until 5 minutes from half time before the Pupils extended their lead to 2-0, this time from Gary Grumoli.

The Pupils continued to look comfortable in the second half and Andrew Henderson made it 3-0 with the goal of the game. David McGeachy finished off the scoring to cap a fine, gutsy, battling disyplay in the midfield.

Next weekend the first team return to league action when they host Glencastle Sparta - 2pm at Kintyre Park.

Scottish Amateur Football League Coronation First Round

First Round Shawlands F.P (B) 1 - 3 Campbeltown Pupils AFC (B)

The B team will be on their travels again next weekend to Lanarkshire when they too return to league action to face Strathaven Dynamo.

SAFL Premier One - Saturday 22nd January 2011
'Under the weather Pupils lose at home.'
Campbeltown Pupils 3 Kilbowie Union 5

A decidedly ring-rusty McFadyen sponsored Campbeltown Pupils went down to defeat against Kilbowie Union at Kintyre Park yesterday (Saturday), the club's fourth home reverse of the season. After three straight wins at the start of the season, the home management have struggled to find a solution to the team's surprising loss of form.
The answer to this particular set-back is easier to diagnose, nine weeks of enforced lay off due to the extreme weather. Of course the opposition have had to contend with the same predicament; however, the avilability of all-weather facilities has helped other league sides to maintain their match sharpness. Hopefully, this will be rectified in the foreseeable future.

It was a day to forget for the Pupils defence, a usally dependable rearguard that looked extremely vulnerable throughout the ninety minutes of play, the loss of five goals, especially at home, simply down to being too far off the jersey. Excellent movement on the end of route-one supply eventually paved the way for an away victory; however, the Pupils spirit was never in question as they chased a late, if highly improbable comback.

It started so brightly for the home side when the Pupils raced to a first minute lead. A long ball down-field from goalkeeper Lamont was misjudged by the visitors back four, the alert Gary Grumoli on hand to fire home from close range to open the scoring. Thoughts of an easy game were quickly dispelled as Kilbowie drew level after only eight minutes of play, a well worked move finished in style from inside the box.

The Pupils recovered from this set-back and were seen to have most of the possession, the main threat to the visitors coming from Barr and Mitchell on the left flank. Nevertheless; a long speculative ball exposed a very square home defence, the Kilbowie number nine running completely free to round the stranded goalkeeper and score with ease against the run of play.

The second-half began with the home side chasing an early equaliser, thus far, probably the Pupil's best period of the match. Ironically, another long through ball undid all the early good work, Kilbowie scoring once-more against the run of play. With the home side eagerly pushing forward, a slide rule pass inside the fullback set-up a glorious chance, the forward finishing in clinical fashion with an angled drive across the goalkeeper for 3-1.

Back came the Pupils with a second goal to keep the game alive. Paul Grumoli made a strong run down the attacking right, his cross-cum-shot flying over the stranded goalkeeper into the top corner of the net to make it to 3-2. The game looked well beyond the home side when Kilbowie scored twice in the space of five minutes. The fourth a deft header beyond the keeper, followed by a fifth from an angled drive from the left.

However; the game continued to rain goals when the home side pegged another one back, this time a scrammbled effort form close-range - but they all count! It should have been done and dusted with the game standing at 5-3 to Kilbowie; nevertheless, it would take a double save from the visitors goalkeeper to finally give the visitors all three points.

Substituete Craig Lang added to the Pupils potential on the left flank, and, ably supported by the skilfull runs of fullback Keith MItchell, proved a useful combination in the closing stages of the match. Disappointment in the end, but there are signs of a side that doesn't give in too easily, the trick is to make sure the game is not lost before it has a chance of being won.

Reports from last weekend's games

Late goals stun Pupils.
SAFL Premier Division One
Campbeltown Pupils 2 Carlton YMCA 3

The McFadyen sponsored Campbeltown Pupils appeared to be closing in on their first win in a number of outings with only six minutes of the match remaining, then the roof fell in with two last gasp goals giving the visitors victory at the eleventh hour. The Pupils made no fewer than eight changes to the previous week's starting line-up, producing a side with an average age of only twenty. It was a bold move to try and kick-start a season that has gone steadily downhill, and, although the game was anything but a classic, a second half fightback looked to have claimed full points, that is, if the final six minutes were posted missing.

In any man's language, this was a cruel piece of misfortune for a young and inexperienced side; however, football is that type of sport. The game was finely balanced throughout, with both teams having their moments in the ascendancy. Carlton claimed first blood when a move down the left flank ended with the striker cutting inside to unleash a low shot beyond the reach McBrayne in the twentieth minute of the first-half. Minutes later the Pupils goalkeeper had to look lively when a ball to the far post took a wicked deflection; however, he reacted quickly and turned the ball over the top to safety.

Half time arrived with a single goal seperating the sides, probably a fair reflection in a game hard fought, but extremely tousy and devoid of the finer silky arts. The second period proved much brighter as a spectacle, especailly for the home side who at last found good possession going forward. The introduction of Renton and Henderson gave the side balance, and, with Mitchell pulling the strings in mid-field things at last began to happen.

A perfectly flighted corner from the right was headed home at the back post by David McGeachy to level the scores on the hour, just reward for the home side's best period of the match, and, the individuals most productive performance in a Pupils shirt. Now on the front foot, the home side started to take the initiiative for the first time in the match, the Pupils's young striker Ryan Gilchrist making an impression with fine individual play.

A first time shot from the edge of the box was fumbled by the Carlton keeper, Andrew Henderson quickest to react when he finsihed from close-range to put the home side 2-1 ahead with twenty minutes remaining. With both side's desperate to get their season up and running, their was little chance that Carlton would simply roll over. However, as the game eased into the last few minutes things looked good for the Pupils first win in five. Then the roof fell in!

A innocuous ball into the box was handled by James Armour as it pitched from the rutted goal area, a stonewall penalty-kick and lifeline for the visitors. The kick was dispatched in clinical fashion to bring the scores level, and, with time almost gone a draw looked on the cards. If it was simply down to fortune, when it comes to the home side lady luck has been looking the other way this season, however, there was nothing fotunate about the winning goal. A lofted ball forward spun over the top of the Pupils defence, the Carlton winger finding devine inspiration to hit a tremendous angled volley beyond McBrayne for a spectacular winner at the death. Hard to take especially so late, but football is not renowed for being a kindly game.

SAFL Division Three
Good result on the road for Pupils 'B'
Jamestown 2 Campbeltown Pupils 'B' 2

Goals from Chris Thompson and Paul McWhirter gave the Pupils B side an excellent draw against pace setters Jamestown away from home last Saturday.
The result could have ben even better if a late goal by the home side in the fifth minute of injury time had been avoided. Still, a positive start to the season after the enforced winter break.
