I found these tonight and thought some people may be interested in reading the match reports from the Challenge Match between the two local pubs - Commercial Inn and Whisky Macs. 8)

From November 1999 - two legs - sadly I didn't have a camera in these days....

Commercial Inn 1 v 3 Whisky Macs
Challenge Match – First Leg

In an entertaining match played at Kinloch Green Whisky Macs defeated local Public House rivals Commercial Inn.

The game started off at a frantic pace with good attacking football flowing from one end of the park to other. Both goalkeepers were busy with Lorne ‘Big Fla’ Campbell in the Commercial’s goal producing an excellent save from a Stevie Gorman shot. At the other end Jimmy ‘Baldy’ Mc Callum was thwarted by Cammy Maguire save in Whiskey Macs goal. Derek Martin was unlucky not to put the Commercial side in the lead when he was sent through but a fine tackle from Henry Sillars saved the day to ensure the scoreline at half time remained 0-0.

Whiskey Macs started the second half with new found determination. From the start it was apparent they wanted to win the game. Chances fell to Kenny Docherty, Gorman and Angus Brodie before the latter broke the scoreline. A defence splitting pass from Robert Judge found Brodie who kept his cool to race in on goal and cooly slip the ball past the ‘Big Fla’ and into the paging net. However, it wasn’t long before the Commerical drew level. Donnie McLean popped up at the back post to collect a Mc Callum cross. He cleverly played a one-two with the post before slotting the ball home much to his team mates delight.

The Commercial should have extended there lead when a good cross from Peter McCallum found Darren Renton lurking at the back post but his poor header was easily cleared by McPhee. Five minutes later Whisky Macs restored their lead. A teasing cross from Judge was headed home by Neil ‘Sparra’ Mc Sporran. Shortly after Kenny Docherty extended their lead when he was sent through and he made no mistake with a fine shot from 12 yards.

The second leg will be played in three weeks time. Teams:- Commercial – Lorne Campbell, Tommy Maguire, Peter McCallum, Robert McDonald, Jim Lang, Gary Farner, David Paterson, Douglas Renton, Darren Renton, Jimmy McCallum, Clark Laffery, Donnie McLean, Derek Martin, Jonathan Bruce, Derek McCormack Whisky Macs – Cammy Maguire, Bobby Dalziel, Brian Russel, Henry Sillars, James McPhee, Neil McSporran, Duncan Kelly, Adam Motherwell, Robert Jundge, Stevie Gorman, Kenny Docherty, Angus Brodie and David McAllister.

Commercial Inn 2 v 3 Whisky Macs
Challenge Match – Second Leg

Whisky Macs secured victory 6-3 in aggregate in this challenge match with another win over the Commercial Inn.

Certainly the Commercial, with a number of changes to their side, will feel aggrieved not to have won this match which they controlled for long periods. However, a combination of poor finishing and good defending was to prove costly to the side from Cross Street as Whiskey Macs pounced on every half chance.

Douglas Renton put the Commercial in front after 20 minutes. A corner from Gary Farmer was headed goalwards by Peter McCallum and finally knocked home by Renton. The Commercial continued to press in an attempt to extend their lead but as the game neared the half Whiskey Macs drew level. A cross from Robert Judge, who up until that point had been marked out of the game be Jonathan Bruce, found Paul Soudan whose shot was turned in by the lurking Bobby Dalziel from four yards out. Whiskey Macs confidence grew with this goal and they took the lead in a well-worked counter attack. Whiskey Macs turned defence into attack when Brian Russell collected a loose ball and passed forward to Stevie Goram. Goram in turn sent Angus Brodie through for a one on one situation against Lorne Campbell. Brodie showed his class when he made no mistake by sending a right foot rocket past the ‘Big Fla’ to give his side a 2-1 lead at the interval.

The Commercial pressed again at the start of the second half with Mr Woolworths himself, Kevin McCallum taking on the unorthodox position of right back, right midfield and right wing all at the one time in a bid to pull back his local into the game. However, chance after chance failed at the final hurdle and again after relentless pressure Whiskey Macs scored. A through ball found Adam Motherwell and he raced into slot the ball home to give his side a 3-1 lead. Neil McSporran nearly extended the lead with an acrobatic overhead kick but the Commercial goalie,‘Big Fla’, made a fine save. Douglas Renton reduced the deficit when he knocked home his second after a Farmer strike. The last 10 minutes saw the Commercial push for the equaliser with little or no luck – with a fine goal line clearance from defender David ‘Cheesy’ McAllister worth mentioning.

Teams:- Commercial – Lorne Campbell, Tommy Maguire, David Paterson, Douglas Renton, Kevin McCallum, Archie Johnston, Gary Farmer, Peter McCallum, Jonathan Bruce, Iain Allan, Jimmy McCallum, Derek Martin & a trialist called Jason!
Whisky Macs – Cammy Maguire, Bobby Dalziel, Brian Russel, Henry Sillars, James McPhee, Neil McSporran, Duncan Kelly, Adam Motherwell, Robert Jundge, Stevie Gorman, Kenny Docherty, Angus Brodie, David McAllister, Paul Soudan and David Skillen

Both sides would like to thank Lenny Shields and their respective hosts for their hospitality after each of the matches.
