Summer Football League

Postby Ship called Dignity » Sun Feb 06, 2005 1:28 am

Anyone out there interested in a summer football league in Kintyre?

Have been discussing this at the Sports Council meetings and are currently trying to find out how to go about setting this up.

Of course a committee would be required as well as various teams - would be great to get back to the days of playing summer football with Carradale, Southend, Tayinloan, The Laggan and various Campbeltown teams. My dad told me about these days...

Idea is that there is football being played in the summer but there is no structure to it.

Anyone any thoughts? Would it be a better idea to encourage 7 a sides?

Meant to reply to this one ages ago.

Summer league would be a great idea with a committee behind it to make sure everything ran smoothly.

Personally I think 11-a-side would be better - none of this kid-on 7-a-side nonsense!

That's just my opinion tho.

Already mentioned to Donald Colville that I'd be interested in helping out if required.

Ranald,

Cheers - that is good. I won't be able to get too involved this year but as mentioned at the Sports Council meeting the idea would be to get people round a table to discuss the possibility. I think it would be good if we even got 4-6 teams playing organised football - gets the banter going again!

Would you be interested in coming along next Monday - there is a meeting at 7.30 in the town hall. Give me a call on Monday - is there any chance you could put a wee bit in the courier about it? (also mention the TA 11 draw?)

I spoke to the SAFA and to set-up a summer league you have to have SFA registered refs etc but I can't see this being the situation in Oban and I have a number to call there.

It wouldn't be that hard to get a league running with that number of teams - if we get the right people with right thinking - to get football again - then it will be good.

Obviously there is a possible knock on affect and some people might play in the Amateur League in the winter!

Greg Flaws team (well that is what everyone else calls them!) ??
Campbeltown Boys AFC under 19s
Over 35s team ??
Carradale ?? (noo that would be a good one for away games!)

Depending on start dates, Tommy Finn and David Gallagher might have a team as well, I know they had one going last summer.

I think I will come along to the next sports council meeting to see if this idea will be a go-er, like you say it might even benefit the amateur club(s) as well.

I think you would have to look at Mid June - August.

Should give enough time especially with nights being available.

Davie G will have finished his rowing coure at Oxford by then, surely? :o

Putting a bit in this week's Courier directing people to this site to express their interest.

Hopefully word will get round and even a couple of posters in the pubs should drum up a team or two.

I know the emergency services (I think it might be lifeboat and coastguard) played a couple of games last year, as did Vestas.

Davie

Any chance of posting an announcement thingy in this section about the league?

Just to make it absolutely obvious for the hordes of people who will come on here expressing an interest after they read the Courier on Friday :P

Should be there - I'll be at work during the day anyway, no chance of a day off!

Sounds like sports council really ain't interested then, I'm sure we could organise something with a representative from each team on the committee or something like that.

We'll see what's what tmrw anyway, I'm going to watch Fame Academy noo!!!!!
