21st May - Defeat sees Pupils relegated

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Sat May 21, 2011 6:01 pm

A 4-1 defeat today (21st May 2011) means Campbeltown Pupils will be relegated to the Scottish Amateur Division 2 next season to finish what has been a bitterly disappointing campaign for the local club.

Needing only 1 point to avoid relegation the Pupils travelled to Paisley to take on Carlton YM in their final game of the season. However, the local side didn't produce the goods and suffered defeat to take to the third tier of the Scottish Amateur Football League.

Below shows how the Premier 1 Table finished.

Meanwhile Tarbert AFC, Kintyre's other amateur club, also suffered a home defeat and will finish the SAFL Premier 2 Season bottom of the league and will encounter a play off now to survive their Premier League Status.

Official match report

Pupils Lose Crucial Relegation Battle

Carlton YMCA 4 Campbeltown Pupils 1

The McFadyen sponsored Campbeltown Pupils are left wishing that someone could remove five minutes from this tense end of season struggle, a few crucial moments when the club's survival hopes disappeared. Saturday's defeat was disappointing, however, the main reason for relegation was failure to claim a crucial extra point from the recent run of home games. It was a much changed side from the previous week's game aganist Duncanrigg and, the team made a nervious start to this crucial fixture played in a constant downpour of rain from start to finish.

A clever Carlton side looked at home on the fast slippery surface and, soon had the visitors defending in depth as the ball was zipped around with more than a little confidence. For there part, the Pupils were in no mood to be over-run and the team defended stoutly in the opening quarter of the match. Carlton managed to grab the lead when a free-kick from the right found the net in the 20th minute, the pace of the ball allowing a header to fly beyond Lamont in the away goal.

The Pupils replied quickly with a sweeping move that saw Gareth Croll outpace the home defence before setting John McCallum free on goal, the latter's parting shot finding the bottom corner for the equaliser. The Pupils were out of luck when the ball struck the bar with seven minutes of the half remaining, the deflection hacked to safety with the goal at the forwards mercy. What followed was quite unbelievable!

Carlton returned to attack and scored with a angled shot from inside the box. From the kick-off the Pupils immediately surrendered possession, the defence caught flat-footed as Carlton swept forward to make it 3-1. The visitor's misery was complete with seconds of the half remaining, an awkward challenge resulting in a penalty kick. The award was duly converted to make it 4-1. In the space of five minutes the game had gone from infinately winnable, to what was the misery of an all but lost cause.

The visitors tried everything to turn the game in the second-half, but to no avail. The game became very stretched as the Pupils lauched forward to retrieve the first-half deficit and, even had the misfortune to have two second-half goals disallowed. In the end, it was a lack of concentration in the last five minutes of the first-half that inflicted the fatal damage.

For the first time in its history the Pupils will play in the SAFL Premier 2nd Division next season, nevertheless, the future is very positive as the club has by far the youngest squad in the whole of the league set-up. The new season cannot come quick enough!
