Pitches in Campbeltown - note of meeting etc

Postby Ship called Dignity » Sat Mar 17, 2007 10:31 pm

A number of people have been commenting recently about the facilities we have in Campbeltown and to extent the lack of them.

I'd just like to copy the following points from a meeting held in early February with members of the Sporting community and the Council.

It has been an extremely wet winter and very few games have been played in the west coast of Scotland over the last four to five months. The point of the meeting was to provide facilities for all sports in Kintyre and to try and get the Council to make use of portable goals etc - you'll see some progress was made but the rain hasn't stopped!

Bullet Points of Meeting Friday, 9th February 2007

Present Alistair McKinlay – Councillor, Argyll & Bute Council
Rory Colville – Councillor, Argyll & Bute Council
Donnie McLeod – Argyll & Bute Council
Tony Lambert – Argyll & Bute Council

Marius Huysamer – Kintyre Rugby Club

I also think that looking into getting some kind of artificial surface laid down aswell would help. I am playing football (soccer) in the US at the moment and most schools are playing on field turf. Its state of the art stuff and is great for playing in all kinds of weather. Not only that, it has great lifespan (at least 30 years before having to be replaced), is relatively cheap, and you are able to play all sports on it. The surface itself is just like grass and provides a great playing surface that needs little to no maintainace. I think it is just what a place on the west coast needs to allow sports to be played all year round.

Just food for thought I suppose.

Will have a separate thread on this Joe but yes agree. Our problem is we will have to wait until 2011 to get ours despite 4 years ago being a priority 1!

Cheap, no, £640,000 for a full size pitch. Still can't understand why it has to cost that much for a big carpet :-)

All the best

Joe,

see when you come home for summer--how big is your bag?? Could you get, say, a big carpet in it?

very surpirsed at the price they are giving you for that. Over here it costs $1 million...and thats dollars of course. Expensive you may think, but that price also includes all the bells and whistles: flood lights, professional style dugouts, movable goals, metal bleacher stands, toilet facilities, fencing around the perimeter, and a small changing facility. Overall, a pretty good deal you get.

Rab: I'll see what I can do with the carpet in the bag, might need to call a few favors in with Willie MacMillan though.

Football Pitches

Postby Sport » Fri Apr 06, 2007 11:11 am

Just to point out that Kinloch Green is now available for hire by contacting the Council.

Still no word on the dual use of the shinty pitch as a football pitch nor any word on the use of portable goals.

One point missed from the above is if the use of potable goals are given the all clear, then all three pitches (two on the Meadows and one on Kinloch Green) will only have goal posts for booked games to try and preserve the pitches. Further goal posts are to be erected which will be used for a "kick around" area but no word from the council on this either.

What are peoples opinions on this set-up? Helps to know others opinions..
