Midnight League to Start Again

If only we had an All Weather Pitch, eh?

Midnight League to Start Again

The Bank of Scotland Midnight League is a national award-winning five-a-side community football development initiative. It is aimed at keeping young boys and girls aged between twelve and nineteen off the streets on Friday and Saturday evenings and subsequently reducing youth crime and anti-social behaviour.

From a successful pilot in some areas of Scotland in 2003, the programme has grown year on year and is now more popular than ever. In the last calendar year, the scheme saw leagues established in all thirty-two Scottish Local Authorities, reaching over two thousand young people.

Argyll and Bute Council’s Midnight League programme starts on Friday 30th January and will be available at Atlantis Leisure, Oban, Kirkmichael Recreation Sports Ground, Helensburgh, Lochgilphead Joint Campus, Rothesay Joint Campus and Dunoon Stadium Astro Pitches.

To get involved, young people should simply turn up and register on one of the nights - it’s free of charge.

Local community police officer Gordon Stewart of Rothesay says "I am really looking forward to working alongside other partner agencies with the Midnight League Football Coaching in Rothesay. This is an excellent diversionary activity that we are having the opportunity to participate in here on Bute."

Adele Mills, Sponsorship Manager for Bank of Scotland commented "Our Midnight League was launched as a pilot scheme in 2003 and it has been a great success across Scotland. In fact, it was voted the Best Community Sports Programme in the UK recently”

The Midnight Leagues are run in partnership between The Bank of Scotland, the Scottish Football Association (SFA), Local Police and Argyll and Bute Council’s Football Development Programme.

It is scandalous that Campbeltown doesn't have a full-size floodlit all-weather pitch. It should have been first on the list for argyll and bute council ahead of places like oban, dunoon and helensburgh.

Luckily, Tarbert has a seven-a-side version which is excellent for us, we have more kids playing football in the village than i can ever remember through the good work of the school, soccer centre and football club.

Funding HAS to be found for one of these in Campbeltown. The benefit to the town would be huge.

Good to see support on this from our Tarbert neighbours. Your post is absolutely correct - it is an actual scandal that Campbeltown does not have an All Weather Pitch facility. The use would be made by all in Kintyre. Your (Tarbert AFC)re-arranged fixture would have been played in Campbeltown instead of travelling to Helensburgh for a home game on the All Weather Surface there.

It is interesting the following update on PLAYING FIELDS CAPITAL PROGRAMME on 27th NOVEMBER 2005

7. CAMPBELTOWN ALL WEATHER PLAYING FIELD
7.1 The Playing Field programme identified the construction of a full sized all weather pitch at Campbeltown, as a Regional Centre, as the next strategic priority in 2007-8. In 2006-7, the Playing Fields Unit will develop this project to a stage at which an application could be submitted to Sportscotland for match funding at a future date, or taken forward, if
an alternative funding source can be identified.

While the Council stuck to their word in developing the project to a stage at which an application could be submitted to Sport Scotland this was done in 2008 with there being no further progress.

Here is a nice picture of the one in Oban showing what Campbeltown does not have and remains the ONLY place in Argyll without one.
