Football Pitches in Campbeltown

Postby Sport » Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:47 pm

At the Sports Council meeting on Monday Argyll & Bute Council highlighted concerns at the number of games being played on pitches in Campbeltown that are not booked and are ultimately resulting in damage to the pitches.

It appears that these range from informal kick abouts to organised games to training.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Are there any parks in particular? Is the Meadows not a public playing field so anybody can use it?

Maybe a bit more clarity for groups would be better whether they need to book it or not etc could combat this.

I can certainly understand the frustration of games being called off; have made the trip down more than once this season only for the game to be called off. However it would be a crime IMO to stop kids playing. It's hard enough getting kids playing, with all the other distractions. They've already banned the traditional kickabout in the street with the No Ball Games sign, would be a shame to force them off the grass too.

Was told from someone having a kickabout recently at the Meadows that they were approached by someone (Council representative/groundskeeper?) who told them they would have to pay to play there, and it would be extra for nets/corner flags/use of changing rooms. Think this would be taking it a bit far for a game of buddies!

Above all it certainly adds to the arguement for an all-weather surface.

Meadows and Kinloch Park. Yes both are public parks but that doesn't mean organised games or training should go ahead without booking the park. It gives the Council a bit of knowledge of who and when it is being used and if they should advise the group to cancel.

The main problem really is organised games going ahead where the park is not booked and leaving the pitch unplayable for other groups.

Couldn't agree more and more comments are welcome. Argyll & Bute Council don't exactly help the issue themselves. We have been arguing for the use of portable goal posts etc for the last few years. Other areas like Oban, Dunoon, Rothesay all have ground staff who insert the goals prior to the games and remove afterwards etc. ABC are carrying out a Playing Field Strategy so would be good to ensure all issues in Campbeltown are covered.

Nobody wants to see informal kick abouts banished but we want to see responsible use of the parks. Again it was previously raised with the Council that we should have a dedicated park(s) for kick abouts etc.

From experience the Council don't listen but we are looking to hold a meeting with them for all interested parties and ensure something is achieved.

From the All Weather Pitch perspective if all official games are booked it gives us more clout to argue the need for one here by demonstrating the level of football in Campbeltown. It also allows us to make arguments about how the exisiting pitches should be organised too.

Sorry to disagree, but public means public.

If, for talkings sake, a group of 7 year olds can't go out with a ball for a kickabout with their mates, without having to resort to pre-booking & form filling .... then it can hardly be a surprise if they stay in their bedrooms & play a computer.

By all means, remove "public" status from some of the pitches.

Not really sure what part you disagree with as you are saying what we are supporting too. 8) In no way do we want kids not playing informal kick abouts. We want to encourage the Council into ensuring they have these facilities whilst ensuring, as you say, other ares are not public (that actually only means remove the posts as people will always go where the posts are)

We will continue to support our member clubs and the state of the pitches is an issue for them as it is for Council.

It is important to get your views. 8)
