Brilliant idea. I'm in Washington D C at the moment - best U S city I've ever been to out of a host of places I've visited here. Was here at Easter but didn't get round it all so back now in half-term. Mr Govangirl not impressed because very few bars!

Was in DC a fortnight ago, nice city with plenty to see and do.

What are flight times to Washington DC? From Glasgow, I presume?

(can look it up but wanted to bump this along )

We flew via Amsterdam flight times were 1hr 15min gla - ams, 8hrs 55min ams - wash(dulles int.).
Return 6hrs 30min wash(dulles int.) - ams, 1hr 10min ams - gla.

Could not find a direct flight from Glasgow or Edinburgh

There are no direct flights from Glasgow or Edinburgh. There used to be a direct flight from Glasgow with United Airlines but that was many "moons" ago.

With one change of plane, it would have to be via Amsterdam, London or Newark. Edinburgh via Paris or Frankfurt are other options.

If it is Washingon National Airport as opposed to Washington Dulles, then the best option is Continental via Newark out of Glasgow or Edinburgh.

You can get great deals with Aer Lingus from Dublin to Dulles, and other nearby airports. Philadelphia is not that far away. and it is very easy to get to Dublin from either Glasgow or Prestwick - again, with good deals available.
Don't know how that compares with Amsterdam ...

Flew into Baltimore in 2007 with Icelandair. Would not recommend this airline as the seats were cramped and the sevice very poor. Flew this time with KLM/NWA and could not fault the airline.

I also flew last year with Icelandair and would never use them again. Cramped seats awful food and surly cabin crew....but worse was to come when we landed to find that customs had been taken over by dictators. All of them as pleasant as a bucket of sh£te.

A German passenger said that he had been in most European airports and had never met such rude staff.

I won't use Icelandair again.................ever

History

I flew direct at Easter this year from Heathrow on BA but I hate flying with them. This time with AA but no direct flights although only a quick stop off at Raleigh, Durham. Fantastic pics howls and the weather is as good as that just now.
Brilliant museums here - was at Newseum today where we spent 5 hours. Enthralling. And the Holocaust Museum was the best museum I've ever been to although it's powerful stuff. It was the Washington Marathon today - now they always make me cry and today was no exception.
I cannot believe how cheap everything is here but I always think that. We obviously live in Rip-off country.
Anyway, I can really recommend here! Great for kids and if you're staying longer, you can hire a car and travel out to Virginia, etc. for the mountains and national parks.

Govan, glad you are enjoying your trip! Go south along the water, turn right and take a little side trip to San Antonio

Had a fabulous time here though and I would really recommend it. Glad to report that Mr Govangirl found his bars - even a pub with over 50 different beers! (I picked out the 'Arrogant Ba**ard Ale' for him). We liked eating at D C Coast for a treat and also at Afterwords at Kramer Books where there was live music.

More importantly, my pal and I found a huge shopping mall and a great Outlet mall.
