Postby Drumlemblehomecoming » Sat Apr 06, 2013 5:42 pm

Arangements are being made for a Drumlemble school homcoming event in July next year.

A committee comprising of Diane Ralston, Karina Lang, Sandra Mathieson, John Armour, Angus Nimmo, and Peter Paterson has been formed to shape and organise the event.

It is hoped that as many former pupils and staff will come back to Drumlemble for this unique event. There will be an exhibition of memorabilia in the school on Saturday and Sunday 12th and 13th July which will be open to the public and a celebration buffet and ceilidh for former pupils and staff on the Saturday evening.

Regular updates will be posted on the Kintyre Forum.

A facebook page is in the process of being set up to provide information to those wishing to attend. Does anyone out there have a photograph of the old school we could use on the FB page? if you have and would be happy for us to use it could you send us a copy please.

information will be posted as it comes to hand but if you have any questions contact any of the above committe members or e-mail us on dhomecoming2014@hotmail.com

Poem sent to us from Margaret Blaylock

DRUMLEMBLE PLACES

There is a place dear to my heart
The Village of Drumlemble
A place from which I had to part
For foreign shores to ramble
No matter when I go back there
I see in my mind’s eye
The places oh so dear to me
From days that are gone by

From the Front Row up to Rhudal
With Burnbank in between
The families that lived there
Are the best you’ve ever seen
Nimmos, McShannons and Patersons
To name but just a few
Browns, McVicars, Irwins and Colvilles
And Monroes…well there were two

The Mission Hall was busy then
On Sunday you could hear the bell
Calling the faithful to worship
As the Gospel they did tell
It hosted Rural parties
Whist drives and many a play
It has now become a home for some
But it was a grand place in its day

A place with much activity
Was the Lewis family’s shop
Selling the things we needed
From bread to a lollipop
It was also the Post Office
Pensions cashed and stamps were bought
Such a necessary little shed
How we miss it…who’d have thought?

And further up the Village
Stood Drumlemble Village Hall
School lunches they were served there
Long ago when we were small
There were dances, clubs and weddings
But it was torn down even so
Left remaining are the memories
Of good times long ago
How sad to see the old school’s gone
Fond thoughts they linger still
The thick stone walls were comforting
Coal fires held back the chill
The building’s been gone for several years
A new school took it’s place
But not within the Village
Where there stands the empty space.

If up the brae you choose to go
The view is worth the climb
Your eyes can look upon a place
That’s stood the test of time
Some things are gone and some remain
Some are just empty spaces
But always in my memory
Are those Drumlemble places

The organising committee for the Drumlemble Homecoming is, Chair, John Armour, Secretary Diane Ralston, Treasurer, Sandra Mathieson, Peter Paterson, Angus Nimmo & Karina Lang.

We are trying to get an idea of how many former pupils will attend the celebration ceilidh on Saturday 12th July. We know it's a long way off and we don't expect anyone to commit to going at this early stage but if you think you will be able to go can you e-mail us at dhomecoming2014@hotmail.com to let us know if you intend to come.

Tickets priced at £1 each are now available from Committee members. As numbers may be limited this ticket will guarantee your place at the celebration ceilidh on Saturday 12th July 2014.

We have still to work out the full cost but we intend it to be reasonabaly priced and so be affordable to everyone and we will post the final charge once we have final arrangements in place.

If you live outwith Kintyre and would like to attend please send me a pm with your postal address and we will get a ticket sent to you.

As mentioned above numbers may be limited so at the moment tickets are only available to former pupils and staff who attended Drumlemble school.
