John McAlister & Margaret McKinlay (1790 - 1880)

Postby boba44 » Wed Sep 05, 2012 7:00 pm

John and Margaret above were my ggg grandparents, can anyone help me with some more information about them and their family?
I have John in the 1841 census aged 45 but this can't be correct (his son is aged 30) and I have a possible date of death for him of 1860, I have no idea who his parents were!
I have John and Margaret married in 1810 and with only 4 children but I'm sure there were more - Archibald about 1810, John about 1815, Catherine 1826 - 1909 and Ronald 1828 to 1907. Catherine was my gg grandmother.
Any further information about them would be much appreciated.
Many thanks Robert.

Hi Robert ! Welcome to the Kintyre Forum !

I’d previously researched your question but came up with nothing; but with so much info, I found it illogical that there was no mention of at least one of them.

I surfed the family trees in Ancestry and came up with one very similar family..., too similar not to be the same. But either you or the member has made a mistake with the McKinlay name. He has her down as Peggy and not Margaret. Except for your Catherine, you probably have more info than him. On the other hand, he looks as if he could also be a gg-grandson. (I could PM him if you want in order for you to share info)

John McAlister:
Birth abt 1796 in Argyll, Scotland
Death
Peggy McKINLAY
Birth abt 1791 in Argyll, Scotland
Death

Children:
Archibald McALISTER
John McALISTER 1816 –
Catherine McALISTER 1826 – 1902

Catherine McALISTER
Birth 22 Jan 1826 in Kilkenzie Parish, Argyll
Death 19 Dec 1902

Husband John McMurchy (John’s father... John 1791-1867: his mother Mary McGleachy 1797-1889 / his grandfather John married to Janet Carmichael)
Birth 22 Aug 1820 in Killean Parish, Argyll
Death 3 May 1907

Catherine’s children: (married 24th November 1846)
Donald McMURCHY 1847 –
Edward McMURCHY 1851 –
Archibald MCMURCHY 1855 – 1887
William McMURCHY 1857 –
Jas McMURCHY 1859 –
Ronald McMURCHY 1860 – 1887

All mentioned in the 41/51/61 and 1901 census. (two elderly brothers dying in the same year !?)

This does not answer your question, but I hope "Peggy" might help you.

Hello Iain,
Thanks for looking into my post and yes I would be pleased if you could contact the author of the similar family tree. I would be happy to share info with him.

With regard to Peggy/Margaret McKinlay, I found some info on "My Ain Folk" for the death of my gg grandmother Catherine McKinlay which gave her mother's name as Kate but a note was added to say that it was not Kate but Peggy. I've used Margaret instead of Peggy, not sure if she was christened Kate or Margaret?

Thanks again, Robert.

I believe Peggy is a diminutive name for Margaret, if that is the case it is probably one and the same.

Iian contacted me about this John McAlister and Margaret aka Peggy McKinlay string. They are distant ancestors of my wife and the information about them I've posted in Ancestry's "David Rae Nelson" tree largely comes as a result of a long series of conversations with other researchers which can still be viewed in Rootschat. If you google "Edward McMurchy of Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland" you will find the string. My wife is a Macdonald and her line coonnects with a brother of the John McMurchy who married Robert's gg grandmother Catherine McAlister. The Macdonalds came from the area around Killean and Kilchenzie, and then moved to Sorn and on to Glasgow before coming to Birmingham.
