Marrion MacMillon

Postby DromanaMonster » Tue Oct 20, 2020 7:51 am

Hello, what a wonderful forum this is. I’m ‘covid-new’ to genealogy and have made some progress, finding leads contributed by folk such as Jenmac, Joy, Joemac and Karen Gorman really helpful.

I’m a descendant of Peter MacMIllan b.1741 and Christian Taylor b.1760, but am out of ideas as to what happened to their daughter Marrion MacMillan b.1788. A lot of family trees I’ve seen indicate she died in Durham County Ontario in 1847. I’ve had a good look around Durham County online records, and can find no sign of her.

Marrion had a sister Mary b.1800, and from what I’ve read, Marrion and Mary can be interchanged. I’m wondering if the existence of the 'second' Mary indicates Marrion died young and never made it to Durham County. I would appreciate a nudge in the right direction. Any feedback for this newbie is greatly appreciated.

I hope all are keeping well.
Regards Mick (Dromana, Victoria, Australia)

Thanks Iain, and sorry for taking some time to get around to thanking you. Whilst awaiting a response to my question on Marrion, a lovely lady by the name of Lorraine has been helping me tackle the siblings of Catherine McTaggart in Scotland/Ontario, and I've been involved with that, with very successful outcomes due to Lorraine's help. But it did drag me away from the Forum for a time. Regarding Marrion, it does seem she is a bit of a mystery, perhaps she'll remain that way. Any thoughts on the proposition that Marrion could have died young (and so no burial record) and was 'replaced' by another child called Mary? Cheers Michael

Re the name Marrian:
in Kintyre this name was often derived from gaelic name 'More'; there were various derivations of this including Marrian ( and all various spellings), Mirren, Misie/Mizie/Mysie, as well as Sarah.
I have an ancestor who was baptised More, was Marion in her OPR marriage, Mirren in 2 census, then Marion again when she died.
I have never seen or heard of Mary being used as an alternative to Marrian in Kintyre.
