Wonderful to see these photos Bill, thanks for sharing them. Many a time I passed there when my grannie sent me with an old pram to fetch a bag of coal from the coal store at top of Glebe St. Oh the affront.

I think the old pram was a fairly standard means of transport for collecting coal at that time. It was a lot easier and cleaner to do what we did and just get the stuff from Neilly Fadyen.

As I was brought up in Albyn Avenue within a stone's throw of the gasworks, these photos recall a lot of memories. It's interesting to see an aerial view of the prefabs and how that area of the town was laid out. The last photo also shows how much that part of the town has changed over the years.

The last picture reminds me of when as a "wee boy" of about 10 years old i was sent by my auntie Mary to "Wee Ted's shop" at the bottom of Albyn Ave to get her "morning fix" of 5 Woodbine's and take them straight back to grannies prefab on Carlton Ave, and if i wasn't quick i would get a clip round the ear.

I never knew until last Saturday, that gas for the town is transported round the road by tanker from somewhere in Wales.

Changed days indeed.

I wonder if the 2 ladies with the pram would recognize themselves?

Really great photos - thank you for them, Bill !
I remember my Mammy taking me down to the front of Gayfield Place one night to see the man light the gas street lamp for the very last time. When was that?
I also remember telling that tale to my mother's "cousins" Lisa Wyndham and Sand Spencer (both 'Mertins' tae the root) from California and adding that there also used to be, I believe, in the days before ordinary folk owned alarm clocks a man who woke the workers up by chapping on their bedroom windows. it caused great mirth when I said that he was known as a 'knocker up.' They felt obliged to tell me that being 'knocked up' means something else to an American!
Happy days indeed.
