Gigha 2011 Results and photos
Posted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 10:40 pmA record 103 entrants registered for the 2011 Gigha Challenge on Saturday 9th April with visitors to the island treated with a beautiful sunny day as competitors enjoyed a choice of events to enter this year. There was an 11.3 mile run, cycle or walk plus a new 5k route for runners or cyclists with some people choosing to walk the route – basically a choice for everyone!
Races staged throughout the day from 11am - 2.30pm, Refreshments were served post race with special thanks to The Boathouse Cafe Bar, Argyll Bakeries, Fergusons greengrocer, & Gigha Stores, not to mention all the wonderful home bakers!
Campbeltown Running Club dominated the main 11.3 mile run taking all first three places in the men’s race with Tommy Moran recording a fine time of 1 hour 13 minutes followed by veteran’s Hector McMurchy and Robert McDonald. Jennifer Reid continued her fine form as the Campbeltown runner took 1st place with a very composed run followed by Rachel Edwards and Katie Ferguson. In the 5k race Peter Paterson was 1st, Kareen Cox 2nd and Agnes Stewart 3rd. Some familiar faces in the cycle race also with the Barries on the podium. Well done to all!

A huge thanks also to Gigha Boats, Complementary Therapies, Gigha Hotel, Gigha Gallery, The Boathouse cafe Bar, Gigha Tablet, Gigha Stores, West Drumachro Eggs, Gigha'a Natural Skincare, GREL, IGHT, Our local smoking cessation officer & cycle safer in Scotland for donating prizes and promotional material for goody bags, and to all those who helped out in various other ways to ensure the days success.
Congratulations to Lori Silvan who won our prize draw for a lovely bottle of Bowmore Cask Strength malt whisky, thanks to all who bought tickets, this will help us towards the 2012 Gigha Challenge!

Competitors and spectators were to enjoy a beautiful day on Gigha - the southernmost island of the Hebrides which lies of the west coast of Kintyre. Gigha, quite aptly also known as God’s Island, has a population of around 150 and is almost 10km in length and at maximum 2.5km wide and covers an area of 1,395 hectacres. If you have never been to Gigha then it is well worth the visit!
