Run 4 it Proposed visit to Jogscotland

For 2011 we have decided to give the healthy local running and jogging community a forum of their own!

Run 4 it Proposed visit to Jogscotland

Postby fiona28 » Sun Nov 13, 2011 11:18 pm

After attending the Scottish Athletics Annual Conference in Glasgow we are currently speaking to Run 4 It in Glasgow regarding them potentially visiting Argyll to do shoe fittings and provide general running gear advice.

They have indicated that they would hopefully bring their running machine with camera set up to carry out assessments of running styles as well as carrying out other assessments to provide advice on the best types of shoes to wear. They would likely bring a variety of shoes and other running gear which could be purchased although there would be no pressure to buy. They are keen to build relationships with Jog Scotland groups in areas more remote from Glasgow and are investigating the possibilities of visiting areas like Argyll.

As this is early days we are not sure whether any visit would be at a weekend or on a weekday evening and whether it would be in a more central location such as Lochgilphead or whether they would visit individual towns such as Campbeltown, Oban, Lochgilphead etc.

It would be useful to know the level of interest there is from runners and joggers across Argyll so that I can pass on ideas of numbers who might want to attend and hopefully build our case for a visit.

If you are interested coming along to a Run 4 It visit then please email fifi8@hotmail.co.uk and it would be really helpful if you provide some of the information below:

Are you in need of new shoes in the next few months?

Are you interested in receiving fitting advice from Run 4 It?

Would you consider buying shoes from Run 4 It on a visit from them (if the price/choice etc was appropriate)?

Is there any other running gear you would like to see them bring along?

Would you prefer a visit in late 2011 or early 2012?

Would you be willing to travel to Lochgilphead if Run 4 It could only manage one location on the visit?

Any information you could give me would be of great help in trying to organise a visit.

Many thanks

Fiona Irwin

Not really, sounds like a sales gimmick, but l would urge everyone to have a pop at the idea, find your gait and try and resist the pressure of buying a pricey pair from them and buy local or buy last years model on line etc.

Sounds a bit negative from me, but it's not really, just giving you the other side of the coin on what you can do. At the end of the day why buy a £80.00 shoe when you can Gait (lol) the same result from a last years model at say 20% or more cheaper.

Probably open up a good debate on our running subject, which has been a bit lost over the last year.

It's a great idea if it saves me a trip to Glasgow to find out! Which I have been planning to do sometime. So if it comes local than great. As it says there is no obligation to buy :!: So if I can (and for obvious reasons) I will buy local.

It would tie in great with the MoK run as an extra stall and would probably have a better chance of greater sales. There is always the thought one should have the shoes befor the run,but one could add if the shoes you have been running in up to now (for however many years you have run), then a few more months or runs won't go a miss til then.

Yes, if one is solely going up to Glasgow for a fitting, then it would be ideal and you could buy the pricey shoe on the extra you saved on petrol.

It will be even better if there is no pressure to buy anything, everyone should be up for it then and look forward to Run 4 it coming down with their road show.

Absolutely not a sales pitch but more of a plea to Run 4 It from the jogleaders who attended the conference. We found the Run 4 It team at the conference very knowledgeable and we were keen to share their experience with our groups. This is also a request that has been made by the Tarbert and Lochgilphead Jogscotland groups.

I also did suggest to them that they could contact the MOK committee, in fact Gail talked to the Manager about this. Jogscotland and Run 4 It have been closely linked for many years with workshops going on weekly for the central groups, so we have asked for something to be rolled out to the rural groups. Also I have never been to a shop and felt the pressure to buy anything out of my price league.

I personally believe that everyone should be wearing the correct shoes fitted by a specialist to aid injury prevention, if your feet are not landing correctly this will through time show with aches and pains further up the body or as injuries. Correct shoes are a vital piece of kit and will save people future injuries or poor alignment further up the body.
Many runners have not had expert help in selecting their running shoes so surely any help we can get must be a positive.

Experienced runners like yourself djd may not feel the need to go but there are others out there not as filled with knowledge as yourself who will benefit from help from the experts at Run 4 It. I am also a great supporter of keeping it local, as the girls in Wee Toon sports will tell you. Once I know which type of shoe I need if I can then I buy from them, but I also do still pop up the road for reassurance eg before starting training for my first marathon I had a shoe check up (and a full body check up from the Willow Clinic), then alternating my purchases between further afield and Wee Toon Sports.

I dont want this to sound like a sales pitch I am not on commission, just a volunteer jogleader, if you think you could benefit give me an e-mail - no pressure to come along and no pressure to even buy anything.

Absolutely agree .....not all runners especially beginners have the knowledge as to what is the best running shoe for them and if an expert can give this advice for free then why not take advantage of it . Ok they will get sales from it, if one chooses to buy , but that is not their main objective . You can take their recommendation and go buy elsewhere whether it be on the internet or local !! How many runners have bought expensive shoes ,without taking advice , only to find out later after developing problems that they were wearing the wrong shoe.

By listening to our jogscotland members we have found out there is a demand for this kind of event so like Fiona said please feel free to come along and get you gait analysed free and remember you are under no obligation to buy from them!

What we are made to believe and what we actually believe is our choice and no one can fault that.

There is no scientific evidence, that either running in bare feet or with a so called top of the range shoe, will lead to injury or to having problems in later life, whether it be a right or wrong shoe.

Even if you buy a shoe from the so called experts, not even he can see a month or two down the line that the shoe will be uncomfortable and is not for you, so that is debatable.

What it does give, is a peace of mind and that someone has reassured you have the right shoe, and not like the old days that a shoe was a shoe, and people could still run in them just as good we do now.

The short article below will help you make the right choice. Also, at the end of the article, we explain Pronation--a biomechanics term that often confuses runners.
Cushioned Shoes

You should wear cushioned shoes if you are a runner who needs maximum midsole cushioning and minimum medial (arch-side) support. These shoes are best suited for biomechanically efficient runners (you don't overpronate), and midfoot or forefoot strikers. Runners who do best in cushioned shoes often have moderate to high arches.
Motion Control Shoes

You should wear motion-control shoes if you are a runner who overpronates moderately to severely. Motion-control shoes will give you maximum rearfoot control and extra support on the medial (arch) side of the foot. Motion-control shoes are also best suited for big or heavy runners who need plenty of support and durability. These runners often have low arches (flat feet).

Performance Training Shoes

You should wear performance-training shoes if you are a runner who wants a light, well-balanced shoe suitable for racing, speedwork, or daily training. These shoes are best-suited for fast, efficient runners who want to train in them. Moderate overpronators can also train and race in some of these shoes.

Racing Shoes

You should wear racing shoes if you have a biomechanically efficient stride, don't have any current injuries, and want an exceptionally fast, lightweight shoe for races. Many runners use performance training shoes or their regular training shoes for races.

Stability Shoes

You should wear stability shoes if you are a runner who needs medial (arch-side) support and good midsole cushioning. These shoes are best suited for runners who are mild to moderate overpronators, and/or need added support and durability.

Trail Shoes

You should wear trail shoes if you are a runner who frequently runs off-road, and are looking for rugged shoes with great outsole traction and some weather- and water-resistant qualities. Many trail shoes are built low-to-the-ground for added stability on rough trails.
Pronation Explained

When you run or walk, you land on the outside edge of your foot and roll inward. This entirely normal inward rolling is called pronation. For most runners, the pronation stops at a healthy point. However, some runners roll inward too much. This excessive inward rolling is called overpronation. Runners who overpronate should wear motion-control shoes, which contain special foams and devices that are designed to limit overpronation.

How can you tell if you overpronate? Here's the easiest way. Take off your shoes, whether your normal work-a-day shoes or your running shoes, and put them on a table with the heels facing out toward you. Now study the heels. If they are fairly straight and tall, you do not have an overpronation problem. If the heels tilt inward (toward the arches), on the other hand, you are probably an overpronator, and should try motion-control shoes. Many (but not all) overpronators are bigger, heavier runners with flat feet.

Help and information is always on hand,to be passed on, some right and some wrong.

Yes it's a choice.

anyone at tin farm 5 remember the title of the book that inspired Rob Reid's running "sandal" , as modelled at the soup and sandwiches :D
think when he has the pair ready - he will run in them :D

an excellent book by all acounts - Rob, what's the title?

I think we should all be running in our bare feet, but failing that it is good to know you are not continually twisting your body when running or landing with more impact than you have to causing more shock through the joints than is needed. Both of these which more than likely lead to repercussions.
Again the info is there for you to either read and accept or decline. Personally I am trying to do my utmost to be still exercising into my 80's :D Too much of anything will lead to wear and tear.

For example I tell people you can get away with eating sh**** for a while but eventually when you request energy back from your body it will decline cos the engine has not been properly fuelled. Same rule applies in many places, if you want something to last and work to its optimum, look after it. Not scientifically proven, just my own personal thought.

Yes it is the runner jackie but they can also be aided or hindered by their shoes without realising it. A large percentage of a runners training and running is mental strength, I would rather use mine to focus on keeping my pace rather than using it to run through the pain of blisters and the black toes that I used to get with badly fitted shoes. I remember getting a blister at mile 3 of a half marathon, that isnt nice. :(

Black toe nails come from doing long distances, running downhill, and not keeping your toe nails short, even if you have a 1/2 size well fitted shoe, it will still not combat black toe nails on certain runs.

Blisters caused by a shoe is normally be apparent within the first early wear, as you women should know when you buy a pair and dance the night away. Also even if you have a well fitted shoe, a crap pair off socks can cause blisters.

If one smokes, drinks and plays the field its is more likely and scientifically proven that one won't last longer than 80 as per usual there are exceptions to the rule.

Sad to hear you have taken all the pain from badly fitted shoes over the years, normally one sorts it out quicker, but there is always exceptions to the rule. (lol)

Think it's a great idea to have them come here, always seem to never get along when I'm up the road! Lisa had mentioned that they were looking to come down to visit JS and CRC so I'm sure if they came one day (maybe same day as a training day or the santa dash?) Before or after xmas suits me (although thinking poss January sale prices/new starts after xmas??) and no wouldn't travel to Lochgilphead. As long as there is no pressure to buy, I'd be very keen getting a gait test done although I'm always a sucker for a good deal on new trainers :D
