It is a wee reminder of how tricky it is to get the balance right, thinking about how big a festival should go, reliance on funders, competition, etc, etc. Our own Festival committee has done well to develop something sustainable, and to keep it that way.
That is not to say that there is no case for the marquee/ larger scale type of festival; rather, that is not without its risks, and would need to be done very carefully so as to secure the future of the Festival, I think.
