I think perhaps there are nine McDougall cousins; Alice Thomson's mother might have been a McDougall and they went to Canada or the States. Does anyone know if this is true or anything more about them?

I think you are on the wrong track.Chuckie, thinking Alice Thomson's Mother was one of the Portrigh Macdougalls. Mary Macdougall.Mathew's daughter, did marry, and was Mrs Thomson. She and her husband emigrated to the States, and had two daughters, neither called Alice.

Oh heck, the lunatics are tring their damndest to take over the asylum This is the first I've heard of this thread being filed under humerous. Right from the start it was full of dialect loaded inuendos that only the indigenous would have an earthly about, but it was always in amongst 'General Chit Chat' and was always leaning more towards historical than hysterical.

The Scouder and many more got things going along with the likes of Bubbly Jock, Mornish or was it Morenish and Sanyanya, with Wee Humphlock, SARID and Chucky Bay adding to the potted history.

No, this thread never got to where it is now on mere frivolity........

Have you tried cawing her with the starting handle ma soul?

Ach Bochan you're there. What the devil are you doing out in all this cold, hopefully not throwing snowballs?

I'm not sure if you've dropped a gear on the Landrover or yanked on the handbrake. Imagine complaining that there is too much heritage appearing on this thread. I think we need to direct him for a wee cup of tea at the Sawmill and hopefully he might take a sender into the building across the road and learn a bit more.

The soul's maybe only got one oar in the water and would probably get stuck at the hole on a flood tide. Ach well, I'm away to get another log for the fire, they seem fine and plentiful this year.

I would just like to register the fact that I am mortally offended that you chose not to mention the NHS's contribution to this ailing thread. OK, so since the advent of NHS 24, things have been going down hill dramatically. However, the new contract has been good for me and Lady Snoddy and has even furnished us with a brand new Landrover, which is an absolute necessity for traversing Kintyre in this weather.

A word of warning though, you shouldn't yank the handbreak on these fine machines as the cable is likely to snap like a carrot leaving you upside down in a ditch. How do I know you might ask? Well one night Lady Snoddy had one or two gins too many and ..............

No, I've just remembered that as well as being my delectable wife, she is also a patient and deserves 100% confidentiality....

Bloody nightmare!

Any resemblance to Snoddy's past and present are purely coincidental!

I don'suppose for one minute that L Roger is fully appreciating the scale or force of bochanry that can be present around these parts. Personally from bitter experience, I never underestimate likelihoods or minority statistics. Tempting fate as my grandfather would have said. Snoddy doesn't even need to be in his landrover for it be levered onto its flanks, as well he may know. All part of living with the spectre of his Tory allegiance I presume..

Snowstorm Feb 1963

Postby chuckiebay » Fri Dec 03, 2010 7:53 pm

IWith Kintyre suffering from the snow today I thought most of you would be interested in the snow of 1963. Look away Roger.

This is based on part of a letter I received from my mother describing conditions then. I was supposed to be going home for my birthday and this illustrates the difference in communications between then and now.

I managed to get in touch with friends in Campbeltown who told me that all the roads were blocked but they couldn't phone through to Carradale so I assume the lines were down. My father had to somehow get to Grogport kiosk to phone through Tarbert to tell me not to set out. The snow had started a week before and it was a solid mass from Wal's corner to the Cross roads - away above the hedges and all the local roads blocked. There was no school Wed Thurs Fri or Monday but fortuately the fishing boats plied between Tarbert and Campbeltown for bread papers etc.

This certainly sounds much worse than what is happening now - so far! Does anyone else have stories about that winter.

Dick Galbraith's car,I think, heading out of Broomfield after the men of the village had cleared the snow. As I remember it, they spent several days digging their way to Torrisdale or thereabouts where they met the snowplough heading north from the town. I'm sure somebody'll correct me if I'm wrong.
