McConachy, Gigha and Killean

Postby calmac » Tue Jan 14, 2020 2:58 pm

I am on the trail of More and Archibald McConachy who lived at taychroman in 1841 census, but I think married on Gigha in 1813, connecting Archibald with the family at Ardelay in 1827 census of Gigha,

In 1844 the family were evicted from Taychroman. Angus Martin mentions a case in 1854 there involving an Archibald McConachy of Achapharick. I checked the birth entry for Flora McConnachy who I think was their daughter, Achapharick 1821, but so far I have not found any of the family there in 1841 census.

Has anyone come across this family?

Hi there…
Have you tried RootsChat ? Also, don't forget that you have the 41 and 51 census.

Now that is interesting, I must try to find them in 1851 census.
angus Martin in his book mentions McConachy's of Achapharick who were involved in a legal case at Taychroman in 1854. If he is still around and tuning in, maybe he could tell us more?

Iain, there is much discussion on rootschat which may be of interest:

18227 census of gigha

Cnocamhuillin, Ardelay

Archibald McConnachie 56
Catherine Smith wife 43

Betty Galbraith widow of the late Malcom MacConachie in Ardelay 47

Family names are listed and sufficiently similar to those at Taychroman to suggest a connection.

So far I have not found a Malcom and an Archibald with the same parents (assuming they were brothers).

I would guess that since his family are older, Malcom was father of Archibald of taychroman in 1841 census.

Am I right in thinking there were a lot of Malcom McCs in a nearby family???

The family on Gigha

Archibald born 1771
Malcom born 1769

but probably not on Gigha. There may have been another brother John. Any connections or ideas welcome.
