Rev John Maclean minister of Killean

Postby calmac » Mon Mar 02, 2020 10:49 pm

Apart from the information in fasti ecclesiae can anyone point me towards something about Rev Maclean, and especially his family please?
He was married to a MacNeill of Lossit House, Macrihanish, as was another Rev John MacNeill who lived on Arran and later became a prebendary of Rasharkin , County Antrim.
Where are the Killean family buried? What became of their children?

Thank you, that is very helpful.

Sinclair just says that Charles son of Rev John died in the East Indies.

There may be some confusion between daughters of Rev John, and daughters of his father Charles Ban?

Ballystretrish could be Ballaphetrish, but is it possible it was once a place on eg Jura?

In my research of my McConachy in the area around Machrihanish and at Lossit, I found that the McNeill of Lossit had connections with Canna, one of the Small Isles.
The Canna History Group have a lot of info on the Island. You might get lucky.
If nothing else the old photos on there are wonderful.

I happened to look at 1779 census of Tiree, and read Ballefetrish.
My guess is that Ballystretrish is a transcription error, given that long s looks a lot like our f.

Tiree has a similar site
www.aniodhlann.org.uk

The McNeills of lossit are in Burke's. McNeil of Tirfergus etc.
Another Rev John married another McNeil a generation before the Killean one. He was at Kilmore on Arran and then in County Antrim.
I cannot be sure, but think the McNeils were aunt and niece.
